Description

In this lesson, students will learn simple past form of “to be” through guided discovery. Lesson will start with pre-teach vocabulary, and then will advance to language learning. They will have some controlled practice exercises to improve accurate usage of grammar structure. Final stage will focus on freer activity to encourage fluency.

  • To provide clarification of Simple past form of "to be" in the context of Today and Yesterday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide context for students through listening practice. In the final stage, students will have opportunity to freer speaking through conversation with partners.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher starts the lesson with picture and asks them to guess where it’s from? Expected answer Italy, shows picture of herself in Italy. Teacher tells her student that the photo was taken in Venice, Italy Last year, I was in Italy. It was my holiday. I was very happy there. Italy was beautiful. There were lots of places to see. Rome, Florence, Venice. It was amazing. Did you go to somewhere new last year? Did anyone? Please talk about your holiday/trip with your friend. How was it? Were you happy or sad? Was it amazing or awful? (These vocabularies are covered in previous lesson)

Pre-Teach vocabularies (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the speaking and listening activity

Teacher models and drills vocabulary on the following: Days of the week: Months of the day Yesterday: shows timeline to elicit ICQ: is it now? last year: shows timeline to elicit to phone (V): elicit using realia (phone), demonstrate calling mother but she doesn't pick up the first time. second time i call, she picks up, hello mum! where were you? I phoned you .... to phone = to call (synonyms) Can I use a phone for it? tring tring.... what am I doing?

Listening exercise (2-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher gives handout to students. Teacher gives them some time to read questions and plays the tape. Teacher asks them to compare answer with pairs while she monitors. If necessary, w/c feedback will be done.

Focus on Language area (8-10 minutes) • to introduce simple past of "to be" (was/were) through guided discovery.

Teacher gives them handout and ask them to fold before function/use. Teacher ask them to read and answer the questions. work in pairs. ICQ: are you going to work alone? Teacher monitors. notes any common mistakes. She asks students to check their answers in group. provides feedback ask to unfold the paper and do exercise B in pairs. Quickly monitors and feedback and asks students to work on exercise C &D. Instruction " please fill in the gap" with your partner. (with hand gesture) ICQ: are you writing on the gap? yes

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher provides handout to do controlled practice. Students will first work alone and then check in pairs. teacher will monitor and provide feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Student will have one more semi-controlled practice exercise to focus on accuracy. Monitors and ask students to check in pairs. Teacher gives feedback if there is time, Teacher will get students to do dialogue practice.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will have the opportunity to practice freer speaking skill at this stage. They will mingle and ask questions about others. Teacher will demonstrate the example to clarify instruction. ICQ: are you working alone? No Are you going to write anything? No Are you going to talk with your partners? yes For e.g., where were you at 8:00 this morning? I was at home/in bed/ at work..... Teacher will monitor and take notes on good and bad example of target language use. provides feedback to whole class
