Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice and improve students’ awareness of the phrases used to convey opinions in the context of places and travelling.

Procedure

Context/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Before showing the pictures students will be asked: Do you like travelling? Can you name any famous cities? (While transferring the handout.) Then students will see pictures of Paris, Dubai, Cairo, Rome and London. They will be asked: What do you think, which cities are most popular with tourists? Have you visited any of these places?

Warmer (1-3 minutes) • Provides some opportunity for students to prepare for the task

Exercise 1a is connected with the listening and last productive stage. In the book, 4 cities are given, I have omitted Cario and added it in the lead-in, because it is not connected with the listening task and it will likely take more time. I have adapted this activity to create some variety for the students according to their preferred learning style. Students will do Question 1a. First, show them the pictures of three cities, Barcelona, Edinburgh, and Rio de Janerio in the main room. Ask them to think and guess the names. Note: 1. Use few words to simplify the question. 2. Pair/Group work depends on the number of students. Read the question: (show pictures) Question 1(1a) Drag & drop the names. (Model how to do) Barcelona Edinburgh Rio de Janerio Instruction: 1.--Drag&drop 2.--In pairs 3.--2 minutes Check: 1. You will .... 2. How many minutes? (2) Pair/Group(Open BORs--2 minutes) Monitor: whether students are doing the right task. Get feedback. Confirm answers.

Preparing to speak (1-3 minutes) • To generate ideas to speak about the topic

This activity is connected with the listening and last productive stage.Students will do Question 1b at this stage and there will be one breakout room. Note: 1. By using few words simplify the question. 2. Pair/Group depends on the number of students. Read the question 2 (1b) What is most important when you decide to go for a holiday? What else is important? (Add option (e) what else to make the question clear.) a how far it is b. the cost (of getting there, accommodation, food, etc.) c. the weather d. activities you can do e. what else? Note: Pair/group work depends on the number of students. Instruction: 1.--Discuss 2.--in group 3.--2 minutes Check: 1. ICQ ...hand gestures 2. How many minutes? (2) (Open BORs--2 minutes. Monitor: whether students are doing the right task. Get feedback. Ans: Who will go with you?

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

This activity is adapted so the students quickly read the texts & then elicit some answers. Question 2 in the book is designed for a real classroom and we are unlikely to have time to do this as shown in the book. Since we have virtual classroom and reading is not our main aim. The text is used here to provide a model of the listening task expected in the next stage. So I have adapted this activity and shortened the text as well as questions according to the audio-script in the listening task. In this way, each student will read it in the main room quickly and then elicit answers. Don’t spend too long on this or you’ll overlap the main speaking stage at the end. Note: By using few words simplify the questions or adapt it.. Question 2. Where would you like to go on holiday? Here is the information about Barcelona, Edinburgh, or Rio de Janerio. Don't worry about any difficult words. Read the text quickly in two minutes. Individually. Start. Impressive: Is it beautiful? yes -- Is it different? Yes ---Do you like it? yes Eliciting some answers: 1. The city where you will find beaches and has a very pleasant climate all year round is ... ( Barcelona) 2. It’s almost always sunny in ....(Rio) 3. In March, it can be cold in.....(Edinburgh) 4. The city which has good choice to stay but it might be expensive ...(Edinburgh)

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

At this stage listening provides a model for the speaking and some functional language for the productive task. Listening is not the main aim. Note:1.By using few words simplify the questions. 2. Pair/Group depends on the number of students. Exercise 3a (total time taken 2 minutes) Read the Question 3. (Highlight ''which city do they choose".) Listen to two friends Linda and Harry deciding where to do on holiday. Which city do they choose for holiday? Instructions: 1. Listen 2. Focus on the city they choose only. Check: 1. You will ..... Give students time to read the 4 sentences before they listen again. Instructions: 1. Listen again. 2. true(T) or false(F) Check: 1. You will talk or listen? listen. 2. Get feedback. Confirm answers. 1. Harry thinks Edinburgh isn’t warm enough. T 2. Linda loves very hot weather. F 3. They both think Rio is too far away. T 4. Harry thinks Edinburgh is too expensive. T

Useful Language (4-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Now look at Exercise 4 (3c) (total time taken 3 minutes) Give time so that students would read. Look at the audio-script and complete the sentences. Instruction: 1--Listen once again 2--Read the script 3--Do gap-fills Check: You will ... (make gesture touch your ear), read, do .... (gap-fills) 1. Cold weather isn’t my idea of fun. 2. I’d prefer somewhere very warm. 3. I like the idea of going to the beach. 4. I am not keen on sitting on a plane for twelve hours. 5. I’d like to go somewhere on the coast. Get feedback: confirm answers. (No BORs) Each sentence is a way of expressing a preference. Remember the climate. (Barcelona: 12 °C in March), (Edinburgh: 4 °C in March), (Rio: 26 °C in March) 1. Cold weather isn't my idea of fun. Does Harry like the option of Edinburgh? no Does Harry like the cold weather? no Does Harry think it enjoyable? No Why? (Because it's cold) Pronunciation: is not= isn't 2.I’d prefer somewhere very warm ... Does Harry talk about the past or future? Future What is his preference Rio or Edinburgh? Productive Task(s) (12-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Make sure to set a clear task. Students benefit from preparation time when they think about what they are going to say. Note: 1. Use few words to simplify the questions. 2. Pair/Group work depends on the number of students. Read Exercise 5 Now imagine you have a week’s holiday in March. a) Decide which city (A, B, C) you would like to visit and why. Instruction: Individually. 2 minutes. Your time starts now. I have simplified this question and removed the first sentence. 2) Try to convince your friend that your choice is the best. Elicit: What is Convince: For example, you want to go to Taksim square but I want to go to Princess Islands. So I will say, we will enjoy nature, we will have a ferry ride, it is good for our health too. So what am I doing? Instruction: 1. --Discuss 2. --With your friend 3. --5 minutes Check: 1. You will...hand gestures(talk) 2. How many minutes? (5) Note: Pair/Group work depends on the number of students. Pair work. (Open BORs--5 minutes) Monitor: Fluency in speaking, pronunciation errors, note down for delayed correction. The repetition of the task can build confidence and fluency. Ok Welcome back. (Exe-4c)Now compare your final decision with other friends. Which city was most popular? Why? Instruction: 1. --Discuss 2. --your decision with your other friends 3. --5 minutes Check: 1. You will...hand gestures(talk) 2. How many minutes? (5) Group work. (Open BORs--5 ) Monitor: Fluency in speaking, pronunciation errors, note down for correction at the last stage.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

At this stage, write all the errors on board that you have noted at different stages while monitoring students. These errors have made mainly in their pronunciation. Correct their errors in fluency, for example if they are saying incorrect contracted forms. Pronunciation: Barcelona Edinburgh Rio de Janerio
