Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of music, John Lennon and the song 'Imagine'.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greets Ss and the lesson starts. T asks Ss if they like listening to music. Random Ss respond briefly and T shows the first task. Ss go to Break Out Rooms and discuss the questions with a partner for 3'-4'. Brief OCFB.

Pre-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T tells Ss that they will do a task before moving on to the text. They will have to guess the meaning of some words, individually, for 2'. When time is up, T shows the correct answers and proceeds to analyse MFP. Ss guess the form and practise the pronunciation chorally and/or individually.

Gist task (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information readingtasks

Ss skim the text about John Lennon for 2' and try to find a suitable title for it. They write their answer in the chatbox. OCFB follows and random Ss justify their choice of title.

Detail task (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ss read the text for 5' and answer the questionnaire (T/F). When they are done, they compare their answers with a partner via the chatbox. OCFB follows where the T shows the correct answers.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned
