Procedure (39-49 minutes)
T will have begin lesson by saying: "I HAVE TO go shopping for new work clothes this weekend because I CAN'T wear jeans to work and I MUST look nice for my students. But I DON'T HAVE TO shop for new shoes because I CAN wear sandals. I MAY go to Taksim, but I MUSTN'T spend too much money." T will then ask sts to discuss in pairs what they have to do with their partners this weekend. After sts discuss, have some of them say what they'll be doing and then explain that we'll be going over modals of obligation today. Then, T will write "obligatory/no obligation/permission/prohibition" on WB in for boxes. T will put up road signs and ask which ones they think belong to each.
T will stick example sentences on WB and then have sts come up and put them in correct box. T will have sts go back to reading used in the first session ("Office Worker Flip Flips Out of a Job"). T will have sts read through text and underline all instances of modals of obligation (must, has to, don't have to, do have to, can, can't). T will check answers aloud AND have them explain why they chose the answer.
After sts complete test #1, T will ask CCQs. "If you don't have to do something, is it obligatory?" (No.) Others listed in LA.
T will pass out gap fill ex. Remind sts to read complete sentences to check for content and not just grammar. Have sts check answers in pairs, write on WB and then elicit why they chose that.
T will have sts get together in groups of 3 or 4 and have them come up with 6-8 rules/things to do for the following situation: to get a fired from a job; starting a new company; crazy rules for a teenager; rules for a new school. Sts will have come up with rules, then discuss as a whole class what some of the rules were. If time fillers necessary, have the groups discuss different topics.
