T shows Ss a short conversation about a man´s trip to Bacalar that includes some collocations with big and great: big event, great experience, big results, great effort, great place and big number Anna: Hi mike, how are you? I knew you traveled to Bacalar last month! Mike: Hello, Anna, it´s nice to see you again. Indeed, I went there to participate in a big event: a swimming competition , it was a great experience, actually I traveled with some friends and we got big results A. Oh! I see! Was it difficult? M. The weather wasn´t the best, we had to do a great effort to finish it. A.: I understand, and what about the place? Is it as nice as it looks in the pictures? M. Yeah! It´s a great place, that´s why it receives a big number of visitors every year T asks Ss to read it individually and identify the main idea from these options: 1. This trip was terrible and Mike doesn´t want to go back 2. The weather in Bacalar wasn´t as good as Mike expected 3. Bacalar is a very popular place to visit and a swimming competition takes place there After that, Ss compare their answers in pairs in a break out room T asks CCQ´s before they start working individually, to confirm they have understood the interaction pattern and the time for this At the end T does OCFB
T shows Ss two of the collocations (big event and great experience) and elicits the rest of them
MEANING; T shows a slide with the collocations in context, and ask: what does this phrase refer to? Are they good or bad characteristics? Do they have the same meaning? what is the meaning for big event? after SS anwer, T explains in each case what do the collocations refer to: big event (important) great experience (fantastic) big results (successful) great effort (large but not physically) great place (impressive) big number (amount) FORM: T asks Ss to identify which part of speech is big/ great and experience/event, Once they have done this, T explains that they are called collocations, a pair of words that occur together. In this case it´s about an adjective and a noun PRONUNCIATION: T Asks Ss to separate the collocations by syllables and identify the stressed one; then does choral and individual repetition
T shows a google form that includes some sentences that must be completed with BIG/GREAT, Ss must do this individually and after that check their answers in pais in the chat box. B) Internet crime is becoming a _____________ problem C) Apparently, there´s been another bomb explosion. It´s really _______ news D) Nelson Mandela will go down in history as a _______ man At the end, T does OCFB
