Materials

Abc TP5 PowerPoint

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of planning a holiday with a travel agent

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening for specific information in the context of planning a holiday
  • To provide clarification of functional language used to plan and discuss holidays

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To introduce selves and set lesson context/engage students

T introduces self (name, where from, college, last holiday). T asks each S to tell us their name, where they're from, and where they went on holiday last.

Exposure- Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and useful phrases in context

T sets listening for specific information activity- Ss will listen to Andy and Fiona plan a holiday with a travel agent and take notes on the questions on the Google Form. Ss will check answers in breakout rooms before OCFB. In OCFB, T elicits answers/explanations to questions Ss struggled with.

Language Analysis (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

Meaning- T sets Google Jamboard activity where Ss work together in breakout rooms to match statements/questions with the situation where they could use them. T shows answer key and has Ss identify incorrect placements and help each other discover the correct answers. Form- T shows PPT slides with form. Ss choose between two choices and put answers in Zoom chat. T elicits verb form/part of speech. T elicits a few examples from Ss using the correct part of speech. Pronunciation - T shows PPT slides on pronunciation. T elicits stress/linking/intonation for a few phrases. T drills pronunciation of difficult sounds/words/phrases with Ss.

Planning for Task (3-5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to brainstorm ideas and plan for speaking task

T sets brainstorming activity and assigns Ss to be either a travel agent (A) or a person planning a last-minute holiday (B). T sets up breakout rooms and sends A's and B's to breakout rooms together. Ss look at potential holidays and brainstorm ideas for the speaking task together.

Speaking Task (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice speaking skills in the context of planning a holiday

T sets speaking task- 'You will work with a travel agent/client to plan a holiday. You will then share your ideas with the class. You have 8 minutes.' T puts Ss in A/B pairs in breakout rooms. Ss work on activity in breakout rooms while T monitors and takes note of idea/language items to review in feedback.

Report (5-7 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

T nominates Ss in each group to share about the trips that they planned and explain why they chose that particular trip. T nominates 1 or 2 Ss to ask follow-up questions for each holiday. Ss vote on their favorite holiday.

Delayed Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To help students improve their language through delayed error correction

T shares a few examples of correct language from the task along with a few language items that need correction or reformulation on screen. Ss try to identify which are correct and incorrect. T elicits corrections and reformulations from Ss.
