To provide scan reading practice using a text about Tips for interviews in the context of interview stages, getting prepared and dressing appropriately, being punctual, shaking hands firmly along with making eye contact and speaking clearly.
Procedure (49-60 minutes)
-Show a video titled "World's Worst Interview-Job Interview Don'ts 101" and before the video explaint that they are going to watch a video about a job interview and after that, they will answer some questions about it. -Following the video, ask the students what happened, what kind of an interview it was, how the man behaved and if they think he is going to be accepted or not based on his attitudes.
- Get Ss to look at the photos on pages 14 and 15 which will also be shown on the board through power point. - Ask the students what they see in the pictures, what the people are doing and where they are. -Also get Ss guess what type of interview they can see in the pictures, reflect the interview types on the board and get them speak about it.
- In order to clarify the meaning of "real you", give some examples from the video they will have seen at the beginning of the lesson. -Ask students: What do you think is the "real you" ? Does the man in the video behave naturally or not? Do you think being real is to behave naturally or unnaturally? When you behave like "real you" how do you behave? Are your attitudes exaggerated or natural?
-Put the Ss in groups of 3 and group them according to the adjectives "great,awesome and perfect". - Give hand-outs with the questions in ex.1b. -Get them to look at the questions and discuss in their groups. - While they are discussing monitor and assist with vocabulary as well as taking notes. -Nominate one person from each group to provide feedback on the task. -After the students' feedback, continue speaking with the most interesting question: "Do you think it is possible to show "the real you" in a short interview? Why/Why not?
-Write dos and donts in two columns on the board. -Explain the students what we should do in an interview will be under the title "dos" and what we should not do will be under "dos" -Make them pair and give 2 minutes to think about it with their partners. After the time finishes ask students what could be the dos and donts of the interviews.
-Pre-teach "show enthusiasm", "answer briefly","shake hands firmly", "send references", "dress smartly", "speak clearly", "avoid eye contact" - Show the pictures of "show enthusiasm", "dress smartly", "send references" through power point and get the Ss guess the meaning of the words from the pictures - Use drama for the words "answer briefly", shake hands firmly", "speak clearly" and "avoid eye contact" to enable the Ss to clarify the meanings of them.
- Get Ss back in 3s and this time change the students in each group. -Group them according to their birth dates. (Seasons) -Ask the Ss if any other suggestions they made are in the list 2a or not. -Ss discuss and match the topics with the expressions in exercise 2a. - Monitor and provide vocab support if needed using CCQs. -Ask that what else should/shouldn't they do in an interview.
-Give 5 mins to read the text on page 14. - After reading, put them back in groups to check their predictions in ex.2a. - Get them answer the questions in ex.3. O/C F/B -Speaking activity using target vocab.
