Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice in listening for gist, specific information and detail in the context of ‘Time well spent?’

Subsidiary Aims

  • • To provide Ss with freer speaking practice
  • • To provide clarification and review of common vocabulary about hobbies / spending time • To provide Ss with freer speaking practice

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss asked to answer, ''What do you do in your free time?'', then T project four sentences and get SS to guess what is the hobby. SS work individually and share the answer with the whole class.

Pre-/Listening (10-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Assign Ss into pairs/groups (depending on their number) and give them 2 min to talk about how much time they spending doing activities in the box given. Check answers as a whole class. Then get Ss to read a small passage about Hannah to answer ''what's her job?''

Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask Ss to listen to the interview with Hannah to complete the information in the diagram from Exercise 2.b. Check to see Ss have understood the instructions by asking ‘what will you listen to?’, ‘what will you do while listening?’ Play the audio again if required. Ss check answers in pairs before they are checked as a whole class.

Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Tell Ss that they will listen to the track again, but this time they need to complete the notes about Hannah's free time. Ask them to read the box before the listening. Give an example and check their understanding by asking ‘you will listen and ….?’ Play the track again if required. Allow Ss to check their answers in pairs before checking them as a whole class

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Assign Ss in pairs to answer the three questions given in their handout. ''Have you got a hobby? if so what is it ?'' , ''How long have you had this hoppy?'' ''Is expensive hobby?'','' Why do you like it ?'' Ss will report the answers to the class.
