Endangered Languages
Intermediate, Grade 8, B1 level

Materials

Main Aims

  • During the class we are learning to provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a dialogue in the context of travel and languages.

Subsidiary Aims

  • During the class we are learning to raise the awareness of endangered languages across other cultures.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I am going to ask students about languages in general, how many languages are in use, what are the most popular languages across the world, and is it possible for the language to dissappear.

Exposure (12-15 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Students will be asked to read the text "Save languages" and provide answers to the questions about the text (Ex. 2, p.8). Then, I will invite students to a discussion regarding the text and what do they think of it, were they aware of the problem of endangered languages, and ask for possible solutions for preserving those languages.

Useful Language (4-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I am going to complete excercises together with the class (Ex. 4-6, p.8) in order to clarify ambiguities concerning the use of a correct tense when talking about certain topics.

Productive Task(s) (13-16 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will give the student the task to work in pairs. They will exchange the dialogue between eachother (Ex. 10, p.9), and later on they will create a questionaire and ask their partner (Ex. 11-12, p.9).

Feedback (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will ask students about the answers that they got in the questionaires and we will discuss them with the class. I will monitor and correct errors.
