Procedure (44-54 minutes)
T writes the first sentence that includes "used to" from the previous lessons's reading text and asks Ss what do they think that sentence means. Then T tells Ss to find the other sentences that include "used to" in pairs in 2 minutes. With a WC FB T writes the sentences on WB. ICQs for this stage: Which sentences will you find in the text? "used to sentences" How many minutes do you have? "2 minutes"
T asks about the meanings of the sentences on WB eliciting the meaning of "used to". Then T gives the HO that clarifies the meaning of the structure. T elicits the diffrence between used to and would. T gives Ss 3 minutes to do the matching exercise individually and then Ss check in pairs. T monitors to make WC error corrections if needed. ICQs for this stage: Will you do it alone? "yes" Will you check it with your partner? "yes" CCQs for this stage: Did we do the action in the past for a while? "yes" Was it a past habit? T formulizes the form of the TL on WB using the examples from text (see LA). T gives the lyrics of the song "those were the days" and plays the song. At the end of the song Ss work in pairs to find "would" in lyrics. CCQs for this stage: Do we use past participle after "used to" and "would"? "no" Do we use the base form of the verb after "used to" and "would"? "yes"
T gives HO to test both meaning and form. Ss works in pairs with the one on their right to correct the word order for questions and answers the questions with the one on their left. Ss answer using "used to" and "would" to practice. This stage ends with a WC FB for necessary error corrections. ICQs for this stage: Are you working alone? "No" you make questions with the person on your right. which side? "right" You ask and answer to the questions with the person on your left. which side? "left"
T uses "used to game" to split the class into two groups. T asks the first question of the game and gets 2 students to WB. T gives both Ss the same question cards and lets them to take a look and decide which questions they will use to create their groups for 15 seconds. T lets Ss to take turns and ask their question to get 1 S each time. When the groups set T writes "What was your weirdest habit between the ages of 5 - 10?". T gives Ss to discuss and find 3 weird habits that they had for 7 minutes. Then Ss write those habits on WB for necessary error corrections and WC will choose the weirdest habit. ICQs for this stage: How many questions will you ask at a time? "1" How many habits will you find? "3" How many minutes have you got? "7" You work alone or with a group?
