Description

In this lesson Ss will practice receptive skills such as vocabulary and listening in the context of "Renting a flat: rooms and things in a house."

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the lexical sets furniture, appliances and fixtures in the context of things in the house

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about advertisement in the context of a flat for rent

Procedure

Getting to know you (2-3 minutes) • to learn names of the Ss and to get them speaking

Hi! My name's Chris. I'm from the USA, but now I live in Antakya. What's your name? Where are you from? Where do you live now?

Review (2-4 minutes) • To quickly review some points from the previous lesson and activate schemata concerning today's lesson

Do you remember yesterday's lessons? Write on WB: What is there near your home? There is a/an_______. There isn't a/an________. There are ______. There aren't any _________. Work in pairs asking and answering these questions.

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Draw a big house on WB. Ask Ss what are the rooms in the house? Elicit: kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedroom, balcony, etc.

Test #1 (5-8 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Put Ss in groups of four. Present vocab HO: Test 1. Instruct Ss to work individually. After completed, check answers with group.

Teach (10-12 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Get FB from Ss. Which meanings are still unclear? Use photos to illustrate meaning. Drill pronunciation. Elicit Form...Verbs? Nouns? Adjectives?

Test #2 (4-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Pass out the images of the vocab and have groups place them in the correct location in the house (kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, etc.)

Reading (5-6 minutes) • TO practice reading for detail in the context of an advertisement for a rental apartment

Present HO 2, and give instructions to read the text and answer the questions about the text. Read text and answer the questions as individuals. Then ask and answer the questions within groups.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with semi-controlled practice of the target language

Ask the same questions as Ex3, but about Ss's home. Where is your flat? Work in groups.
