Main Aims

  • To provide review, clarification and practice of WILL for predictions

Subsidiary Aims

  • GTKY - as this is the first lesson with the new TP group, and some new students are also expected. Some of the activities should help with getting to know the ss as people and as learners of English
  • We'll practice speaking and listening on the subject of positive thinking.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T introduces the idea of "optimist" and "pessimist" by drawing a glass of wine on the board. Is it half full or half empty..... It is important to understand that this is a philosophical position. Both are looking at the same phenomenon. Ask around the class...are you an optimist or a pessimist?

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Give the YOU part from page 30 and ask students what a pessimist would say in these situations. This is for them to discuss. T should watch carefully and see what sort of problems they have.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Depending on what seems to be the highest priority a number of possible sections could be included in this slot: A - distinguish going to and WILL B - Focus on the form of WILL C - pronunciation D - help with doing the activity itself

D - help with doing the activity itself....hand out the possible answers for pairs to match • if the ss are stuck for ideas or vocabulary they can use ready made answers

hand out between pairs possible answers HO based on p30 / or play recording 3.3 and use it as a dictation

A - distinguish going to and WILL • distinguish going to and WILL (meaning)

with the paper folded over - first look at the picture of the cloud to elicit "it's going to rain" The look at the other part and consider - why is this different?

B - Focus on the form of Will • clarify the form of positive and negative sentences

handout from the grammar bank at the end of the book

C - pronunciation • to clarify the sound of the diphthong in WON'T

write up the two words want and won't. show the transcription and play the six recordings as a dictation. What are they saying?

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Use the handout from the Teachers book as a second test. This is PW so that the teacher can monitor what ss are saying and writing.

Listening about positive thinking (5-7 minutes) • to lead in to the speaking part

Listen for gist with the introduction to a radio programme. Try to predict the advice callers will give. Listen to check what they said. play again with answers.

Free practice Are you a positive thinker? (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

speaking - controlled practice with "good luck" etc. worksheet freer practice with the worksheet "are you a positive thinker?"
