Description

In this lesson, students are exposed to the negotiations skills and how to use functional language in similar situations. They will be also exposed to the 1st and 2nd conditionals to use in negotiations and making offers.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Role play & mini presentation in the context of Negotiation Skills

  • To provide practice of 1st & 2nd conditionals in the context of Negotiation Skills

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will instruct SS to the following before playing the video: Watch the video, then answer these questions: What did the aliens want? What happened after? Then the teacher will ask SS about what they have understood from the video and how do they feel about it.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Teacher will pre-teach blockers in the questionnaire before handing it out to SS. Neutralize - /ˈnjuːtrəlʌɪz/ - CCQs: - Is it a verb? – Does it mean to stop an action? Tactics - /ˈtaktɪk/ - CCQs: - Is it a noun? – Is it important to have in negotiating? Parameters - /pəˈramɪtə/ - CCQs: - Is it a noun? - Are they the same as guideline? Encounter - /ɪnˈkaʊntə/ - CCQs: - is it planned? – Is it a verb? Bargain - /ˈbɑːɡɪn/ - CCQs: - Does it involve a buyer and a seller?

Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

The teacher will give SS instructions on how to fill out the questionnaire. Then he will present the results on the screen and ask SS for feedback.

Planning (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

SS discuss the questionnaire results in the same groups.

Report (6-8 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

SS from each group share the results of the questionnaire with the class.

Language Analysis (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

Teacher demonstrates a negotiation using “If” Teacher makes up a story to SS on the shown sentence and elicits answers from SS. Teacher elicits from SS: where is the if clause? – How many sentences are there? – Where is the present simple? CCQs: 1- Is there a possibility the they will get a discount? – Is it a firm offer (probable to happen)? 2- Did they order 100 cases? – Did they get a larger discount? – Is it a hypothetical idea? Firm Offer First conditional if+ present simple, will + infinitive without to This describes a possible situation and its probable result. Less Firm Offer Second conditional if+ past simple, would + infinitive without to This describes an unlikely situation and its probable result. Drill for pronunciation on the following sentences: - If you sign the contract today, we'll give you a 10% discount. - If you ordered 100 cases, we would give you a larger discount.

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

Divide SS into 4 groups (3, 3, 3, 3). Each group gets a product then writes a dialogue to present the product and try to convince the other groups to buy it using the 1st & 2nd conditionals. The team who succeeds in selling their product wins.
