Main Aims

To provide specific information listening practice using a text about bluffing incidents in the context of childhood memories
Subsidiary Aims

To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of childhood superstitions
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students
Show ss the pictures of each story. Put them in pairs to discuss what they think is the story behind each picture. Get some ideas before moving on (3-4 mins)
Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible
Pre-teach vocab: slot machine, slide (v), a fairground, to bully someone
While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks
Who was happier at the end of the story – Justin or Helen? Ss listen and answer – pair check, open class feedback
While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks
Ex 3 – ss listen and answer the questions. pair check, open class feedback
Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned
Ex 4a – give ss time to choose a topic and think how they’ll tell the story (2 mins thinking time) then work in pairs or small groups to tell their stories.
