Description

In this lesson, Ss will mainly practice reading emails about them. They will think about how to cook food. Finally, they will look at language for recipes and even describe some recipes in class.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson , Ss will be able to : 1_ Read emails and its reply about an invitation to a restaurant .2_ practice using cooking verbs.3_Talk about food you eat every day.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of cooking verbs in the context of recipes.

Procedure

Warm up (2-3 minutes) • To energize Ss & have fun

_T divides Ss into groups of five. _ T gives each group a fruit name ,e.g. bananas, apples, peaches and oranges. _ T energizes Ss using (stand up _ Sit down ) game; T says every body stand up, bananas sit down , oranges sit down , bananas stand up, apples sit down, etc. _Ss have to do it fast, the group that makes a mistake becomes out of the game.

Lead_in (3-5 minutes) • To raise Ss interest to the topic .

_T presents a photo of a chef. _T asks Ss ( Do you know this chef?) , Yes _T asks Ss ( where do you see him?), On cooking TV programs. _T asks Ss (Have you ever tried any of the food he makes?), Yes/ No

Skimming (3-4 minutes) • To provide an overall idea of the task.

_T asks Ss to read the first email individually and answer the following questions. They have 2 minutes. _T asks ICQs *Will you work individually, in pairs, or in groups?_" individually" * will you read the first or the second paragraph ?_"first" *How many minutes do you have?_"two minutes" _T shows the questions using PPT. The questions: * When will Josh's dad arrive? *What does Josh want to do? _T nominates some Ss to answer. Answers: * He will arrive next week. * Josh wants to take him for dinner.

Scanning (3-4 minutes) • To read the text closely for more details.

_T asks Ss to read the first email . They ,then, work individually to answer the questions. They have 3 minutes. _T asks ICQs * Will you work individually, in pairs, or in groups?_" individually" * will you read the first or the second paragraph ?_"first" *How many minutes do you have?_"three minutes" _T shows the questions using PPT. The questions: * Who lives in London_Josh or his dad? *Which restaurant does Josh want to go to? * Why does Josh want to go to this restaurant? _T nominates some Ss to answer. Answers: *Josh lives in London. * He wants to go to "Dinner" * Because his friend Pete goes there every time his parents are in town.

Extended Task (detailed) (5-7 minutes) • To make sure the whole idea has been covered.

_T uses (think, pair, share) _T asks Ss to read both emails again and the information about Heston Blumenthal. Then , decide in pairs if the following sentences are true or false. They have 4 minutes. _T asks ICQs * Will you work individually, in pairs, or in groups?_" in pairs" * will you read the first or the second paragraph ?_"both of them" *How many minutes do you have?_"five minutes" _T shows the questions using PPT. The questions: * Huston is famous because he has got two restaurants. * Josh loves the brown bread ice cream at "Dinner". * Josh's dad wants him to cook roast chicken and boiled potatoes. _T checks answers: *F_ He is famous because he makes strange and unusual food. * F_ Josh's friend's mother loves the brown bread ice cream at "Dinner". * T * F_ He wants to go to a normal restaurant or have a can of soup at Josh's place.

Extended Task (detailed) (2-3 minutes) • To make sure the whole idea has been covered.

_T asks Ss to answer ex. A SB p. 43. They will work individually. They have two minutes. _T asks ICQs * will you work individually, in pairs ,or in groups?_"individually" * How many minutes do you have?_" two minutes" _T checks answers: 1_c 2_e 3_a 4_d 5_b # Fast finishers *_T gives handouts to fast finishers. The handouts contain different kinds of food, the T asks Ss to categorize them according to their way of cooking,e.g. roast, baked, boiled, grilled or fried.

Productive follow_up task (5-6 minutes) • To write a recipe using cooking verbs&speak about them

_T divides Ss into groups of 6. _T asks Ss to write individually about their favorite recipes using cooking verbs. Ss won't write the name of the recipe. They have 4 minutes . _T asks ICQs: * will you work individually , in pairs , or in groups?_" individually" How many minutes do you have?_"4 minutes" Will you write or speak about recipes?_"write" _When time finishes, T says mingle. Each student should give his handout to their face partner. Face partners have 2 minutes to read the recipe and think about its name. _T checks answers _T nominates Ss to come in front of the class and explain their recipes.
