Procedure (34-43 minutes)
With using a puppet and holding a conversation Direct each student to hold in the air a personal item he has at his desk. Choose one and say, "I see [student]'s [item]." Write the same sentence on the board.
Explain to students that the sentence shows an example of a possessive noun—a noun that shows ownership. Underline the student's name and point out that it is the possessive noun. Further explain that writing possessive nouns involves an apostrophe and a set of easy to follow rules. Circle the apostrophe in the sentence. And then Direct students to hold up their items again. Name a student and her object as you did in Step 1. Then project a copy of the flowchart. Guide students to answer the questions to determine how to write the possessive noun.
Tell students they will soon be tasked with writing possessive nouns on their own. Give each student a copy of the flowchart to keep as a reference.
