Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about dystopian novels in the context of Hopes & Fears
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide clarification and practice of the verb "get" in the same context.
Procedure (23-32 minutes)
T review the vocabulary taught previously (world problems: hunger-natural disasters-war) then shows pictures with pessimistic and optimistic predictions about life in the future (cities) and asks Ss to imagine and discuss in pairs how life will be in the next 50 years. T monitors the activity and takes notes before checking answers. T pre-teach part of the vocabulary eliciting/introducing some of the concerning words while giving FB . T models and drills the new terms.
T gives the students the hand out (Course book page 46) and asks them to skim the text and do the first task (Ex 3) individually. The whole class checks and discusses the answers. The teacher tests the global understanding and gives FB. T introduces the word "dystopia" to Ss and refers them to the glossary.
Ss will be asked to intensively read again the text individually and work out the second task (Ex 4). Ss can check the answers in pairs or in groups. T asks Ss for justifications to check the concept then he gives feedback.
The teacher pastes on the board vocabulary cards containing sentences where the verb "get" is used and asks the students to run to the board and match them with the right card in which the verb is explained through a synonym. The WC checks the answers and T tries to elicit the rule. T hands out the worksheet (Language Links), and asks the Ss to do an extra practice and checks the instructions. Ss check in pairs their answers and T gives feedback.
T puts the Ss in small groups of 3, in a way that in each group there's both pessimistic and optimistic view of the future life and asks Ss to discuss the issue using the new words. T monitors the activity and corrects errors if they occur. Ss swap groups to discuss it as wide as possible.
