Description

In this lesson, students look at personal qualities and their positive and negative impact on the team environment. It starts with a general discussion about teamwork and success. Then, the class completes a grouping exercise relating to skills and personality. This is followed by a grammar task which focuses on prefixes. Two role plays give students an opportunity to be creative in the production phase. And, the lesson wraps up with a summary overview.

Main Aims

  • To produce language relating to personal qualities in the context of teams

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practise using adjectives with and without prefix forms to denote positive and negative connotation

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set the context and engage students

T. will show the class a drawing of a team. Qs - What is this? What other teams are there? ie. Families, Work teams etc. Are there good team and bad teams? Point to one of the characters in the drawing - What qualities should/shouldn't he have to help make his team successful?

Pre-Speaking Activity (8-10 minutes) • to aid students' ability to recognize key vocabulary for follow up tasks

T. provides W/S 'Team'. Checks that Ss understands the sub headings 'Skills' and 'Values' etc Hands out the Personal Qualities list and tells Ss to place them under the subheadings. T. models an example. Ss work in group/s. **********time limit advised WC check

Lexis (4-5 minutes) • to focus on prefixes for meaning

T. introduces the Prefix W/S. Focus - the form is used to give opposite meaning and gives the words negative conotations. In Groups Ss match the prefixes to the adjectives T. models an example. ***Time frame. WC check

Production Task / Speaking (10-15 minutes) • to provide students with practice of the target language

T. writes Good Team/Bad Team...on WB. Sets the first scenario - Team meeting - good boss with good team. Provides WC with character role-play cards. Advises Ss that they use the info on the cards and act out the parts. Ss use TL but are encouraged to be creative and to use stress for emphasis ............ Second scenario - Film set - bad boss with bad team (S. Spielberg, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt) Same guidelines as first scenario ...... A few mins provided prior to each role-play to allow Ss to read the cards and ready for the tasks. .
