T starts by refers to the previous lesson and tries to engage SS in a short conversation about music and how it affects them.
T introduces the first (HO1). the main purpose of this stage is to test students about their previous knowledge of Gerunds and Infinitives and their ability to use the language effectively. T instructs the SS to circle the correct form on the Hand out. SS are suppose to work individually answer the questions and they have 3 minutes to do so. Subsequently, T instructs SS to share their answer with a partner and find the inconsistent answers. At this stage, T monitors effectively and attentive to find any errors or any difficulty SS encounter. such anticipated problems might be; when to use a gerund after certain verbs and when to use infinitives after certain verbs. when to use both gerunds and infinitives for certain verbs such as; like, love, prefer and hate. In the main time, answer keys will be provided on the white board. Afterwards, T asks SS individually to read out some sentences and T tries to correct them.
After noticing some difficulties form SS, T focuses on the clarification aspect of the sentences. To further clarify the the verbs, T plays an audio file that highlights three sentences; 1. i enjoy listening to music. I couldnt help laughing------> Using gerund after a certain verb 2. i want to speak to you. They cant afford to buy a new car. ----> Using infinitive(with to) after certain verbs 3. it might rain tonight. i'd rather eat in than go out tonight.----->use of gerund with out to with certain verbs. At this stage, T is trying to expand SS knowledge of verbs which can take Gerund and those that take infinitive with or with out to. So SS are to listen attentively and T provides the model sentences on the board with the help of SS. T also clarifies the main difference between a gerund and infinitive which is; we use gerund when we talk generally and infinitive when we talk specifically. Furthermore, T plays the second audio file. this file shows some verbs that can be followed by a gerund or infinitive(with to) with no difference in meaning and verbs that can be followed by the gerund with a change in meaning. remember + infinitive =you remember first , the you do sth. Remember + gerund = you do sth then you remember. forget + infinitive + you didnt remember to do sth. Forget + gerund = you did sth and you wont forget it. etc T highlights all the points on the WB with different markers and makes sure SS understand the concept by asking some CCQ's.
After the clarification, T provides SS with another HO2. This stage is where SS get a controlled practice to test what learners have learnt form the clarification stage. As usual, SS complete the task individually and then compare their answers with a partner in order to find inconsistent answers and T provides a quick error correction. T provides the last HO3 of the day, which is a semi controlled practice. This stage further clarifies any doubt or difficulty any SS is facing. T gives a short time for SS to answer. Answer keys will be provided at the back of the paper for personal assessment.
T shuffles the class and instructs SS to work in pairs and discuss one thing that.... 1. you'll never forget seeing for the first time 2. you sometimes forget to do before you leave the house 3. you must remember to do this week or today. this stage is just to practice the use of the language (gerunds and infinitives) effectively.
