Description

In this lesson, students learn about phrase and vocabulary that is related to an interview with a journalist by playing recording. There is some controlled practice through listening.

Materials

Abc the copy of straightforward intermediate book

Main Aims

  • To provide for students to practice listening for gist and specific information in the context of an interview with a journalist who just written a new book about the World Bank.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide for students to listen and be able to use vocabulary in speaking activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

*The teacher asks the students general questions about the news. For example: (Do you read newspaper/ magazine every day? If yes (to what extent do you like to read?)

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

*The teacher shows pictures for teaching blocking words. such as: keep at, journalist, come along, tight schedule. *The teacher has CCQ while teaching .e.g(do you have to continue or leave it? for (keep at)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

*The teacher asks the students to read topics individually in exercise one for 1 minute. *ICQ: are you going to tick or fill in the blank? *Then the teacher plays a recording. After that, the teacher checks the answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

*The teacher asks the students to read seven questions individually and choose the answer. *Then the students check their answers in pairs. After that, the teacher plays the audio again. *The teacher gives an audio script to students and asks them in pairs to explain what the words in italics in the sentences and phrases refer to. *ICQ: Do you work in pairs or individuals?

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

*The teacher asks the students to write a paragraph about a journalist in this question(what would you say to someone who wants to become a journalist.) *Then the students should talk to each other and express their ideas.
