Description

In this lesson , Ss learn about the present simple : positive & negative through guided discovery based on a listening conversation about transportation to work. The lesson starts with a discussion about how they go to university everyday through a labeled pictures. This is followed by a listening conversation where Ss listen , answer some questions and practice this conversation . Finally there is some controlled practice through sentence reformulation and free practice via a final role-play speaking activity.

Main Aims

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T. shows some labeled photos of transportation using PPT. T. writes on the board " I walk to the university everyday. " T. reads the sentence to Ss. T.asks "What about you?" Discuss in pairs how do you often go to your university. T. asks 3 Ss randomly to repeat his partner's answer . T. writes the Ss' answers on the board using the form of the present simple properly with colored markers without explaining the rule.

Pre-teach vocabulary (2-3 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the taget language

Book closed. T. introduces the new vocabulary through some pictures of a downtown & suburb Suburb: outside area of a city where many people live.(See the attached MPF) CCQs 1- Is this place inside the city or outside it? (Outside) 2- Is Taif University located in the center of Taif? (No , in the Suburb.) downtown : the business center of a city. (See the attached MPF) 1- Is it in the center of the city? (Yes) 2- Is Panda Mall in the center of Taif ? (Yes)

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Book closed. T. says "Now, you are going to listen to a conversation between Yuto and Austin." T. shows using the PPT this focus question and says "Work in Pairs and answers this question( What kinds of transportation do the speakers talk about?)" T. plays the audio program and Ss listen for the answer. T. asks Ss randomly . (Answer: a car, the bus , the train)

Gist Task (4-7 minutes) • To make Ss familiar with the target language before explaining it

T. says" Now , you're going to listen again to Yuto and Austin's conversation. choose the correct answer in Pairs in 3 minutes." ICQs: 1- Are you going to work in groups? (No, in pairs) 2- Are you going to match the items? (No, we are going to choose the correct answer.) 3- How much time do you have to choose the correct answers. (3 minutes) The questions are: 1- Austin's sister drives to _______(work- school). 2- Austin's sister works is in _________(suburb-downtown). 3- Yuto's parents work _______(downtown- suburb). 4- Yuto's parents use the __________(bus-train). 5- His parents do not use the __________(bus- train). 5- The bus doesn't stop ___________(near -far) their house. T. plays the audio program and Ss listen for the answers. T. monitors Ss as they are working , and provide support if needed, after 3 minutes T.asks Ss randomly to answer the sentences, then displays them using the PPT T. checks the answers randomly. Answers: 1- Austin's sister drives to work. 2- Austin's sister works is in downtown. 3- Yuto's parents work suburb. 4- Yuto's parents use the train. 5- His parents do not use the bus. 6- The bus doesn't stop near their house.

Clarification of language focus (6-8 minutes) • To make Ss absorb the form of present simple in positive and negative form

T. asks Ss to underline all the positive verbs and circle all the negative verbs in the previous Ex. T. says (Now, you're going to work in groups of 4, you have only 4 minutes) ICQs: 1- Are you going to work in pairs? (No in Groups) 2- Are you going to write False or True? (No , we are going to underline all the positive forms and circle all the negative forms of the verbs) 3- Do you have 10 minutes to finish? (No , we have only 4 minutes) 1- Austin's sister drives to work. 2- Austin's sister works is in downtown. 3- Yuto's parents work suburb. 4- Yuto's parents use the train. 5- His parents do not use the bus. 6- The bus doesn't stop near their house T. asks Ss which form is for third person? (verb +s) T.displays the answers on a slide for Ss to check

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T. asks Ss to open their books and answer Ex 3.a in pairs in 4 minutes Ex. 3a Look at the sentences from 1b and 1e and complete them with the verbs from the box. ICQs: 1- Are you going to work in groups ? (No , in pairs) 2- Are you going to correct the sentences? (No. we are going to complete them with the verbs from the box) 3- Do you have 2 minutes to answer these sentences ? Free Practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language, and to praise good use of TL and correct the errors

T. asks Ss to write 5 sentences about how they go to university, shopping and Makkah , three true and two false. T. says (Now, you are going to write 5 sentences about how do you go to shopping, university and Makkah ,three true and 2 false . You have 4 minutes to finish.) ICQs: 1- Are you going to speak or write? (Write) 2- Are you going to write about your friends or you ?(Me ) 3- Are you going to write 2 sentences ? no 5 sentences 4- Are you going to write 2 true sentences ? no 3 true sentences. T. monitors and gives help if needed. T. asks Ss to give some of their answers in front of their classmates.
