Description

In this lesson the Ss will focus more on grammar (can, could, be able to) by reading reading about three people who have tried (but failed) to learn something.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and inference reading practice using a text about "I've never been able to..."

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of learning an ability in the context of scuba-diving, learning languages and learning to dance

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show them some photos from my childhood and adulthood and ask them to share their opinions about what I was able to do back then and now.

Pre-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

As a pre-reading activity, I will ask them to look at some pictures on my slides and then tell what they are. - Scuba-diving - Learning to dance - Speaking Japanese So at the end of this, they will have a general idea about what we are going to read about. Maybe, I will also pre-teach some vocab that is in the text.

While-Reading #1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

They texts they will read has some gaps in them but still I will ask Ss to read the texts first. Just a quick scan. Then I will give them 7 sentences that are missing from the texts. First reading will be an individual task and the second will be PW.

While-Reading #2 (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

I will ask them to read the whole text once again in details and answer the questions; - Why did they have problems? - Have they completely given up trying?

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

As a final task, I will change the pairs and I will ask students to answer these questions in pairs; - Have you ever tried to learn something and given up? - WHY? (the other pair will have to tell to the whole class)
