Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Salah El-Din's Castle.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of the hard words in the text.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher asks the students about the famous monuments that they have visited in Cairo and shows them some photos of these monuments.

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher provides his students with a task about the hard words that they may face during reading the text. They will try to guess the meaning and match it with the word. Then, they will check their answers in pairs. After that, the teacher discusses these words the students.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The teacher asks the students to read the text and tell him the main idea of the text.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The teacher asks the students to read the text and answer some questions about the text. Then, he asks them to work in pairs and check their answers. After that, the teacher check the answers with the students.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students write a paragraph about another castle that they've visited. Then, they exchange their paragraphs to check them for each other.
