Best Friend - Listening class

Description

In this lesson, students will practice listening as a main skill and speaking as a sub skill. Students will learn relevant vocabulary related to the topic of "Friendship". Ss will also have the opportunity to identify the main idea and details of an audio and express their opinion in the context of "Friendship and the Good Friend". The lesson will begin by a warm up throughout a video that records all the nice moments during the course throughout the students' pictures accompanied by a song that help the students to elicit the topic of the lesson which is "friendship". Then Ss will answer personal questions about friendship and the characteristics of the good friend to be exposed to the topic. Then the teacher will explain 2 new words or what we call "blockers" in order to facilitate the listening process for the students. Actually, the previous steps represent the pre-listening stage. Then Ss will pass through two other stages which are the "while listening" and "post listening" through having gist and detailed questions. Ss will listen to the audio for two times to be able to answer the general and detailed questions. Then the "post listening" stage that the students practice another sub skill which will be speaking throughout opening a debatable discussion that will encourage the Ss to speak.

Main Aims

  • Listening: The main aim of the lesson is to give students practice on "Listening", throughout "Skim Listening for Gist" and "Listening for Details" in the context of "Friendship".

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking: The sub aim is speaking. At the end of the lesson students will be able to express their pinion in the context of " Friendship".

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will start the lesson by a video that record all the nice moments during the\ course throughout the students' pictures accompanied by a song that helps the students to elicit the topic of the lesson which is "friendship". Then the teacher will ask questions like: • Do you have many friends? • Who is your best friend? • What are the characteristics of the good friend?

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-teaching vocabulary: To unblock key lexis needed to help students understand the audio well as the tasks. Actually, the answers of the questions that were mentioned in the warm up will lead to new vocabulary that will be mentioned in the audio. The teacher will ask the Ss is your best friend do anything to make you happy or comfortable? Is he/ she caring? Is he / she remembers what other people want, need, or feel, and try not to upset them? Then he/she is thoughtful. Then the Ss drill the word "thoughtful" chorally and individually. Then the teacher will write on the white board. Then the teacher asks the Ss do they think they can live without friends? Then the teacher will show a picture for a lonely woman to introduce the word "loneliness". Then the Ss drill the word chorally and individually.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The teacher will show the Ss these two questions on the PowerPoint presentation before listening to the audio. Then after the first listen they will answer them, and discuss it with their teacher. • How many people are talking? • What is the conversation about?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The teacher will distribute the first part of the detailed questions which is the MCQ Questions. Then the teacher asks the Ss to read it individually. Then the Ss will listen to the audio for the second time. After listening to the audio, the students answer the MCQ questions individually and correct to each other, and discuss the answers with the teacher. The then teacher will show them the answers on the PowerPoint presentation. Then the teacher will distribute the second part of the detailed questions which is "true or false" section. The Ss will answer the questions individually and make the peer review. Then the students will discuss it with the whole class. Finally, the teacher will show the model answer on the PowerPoint presentation.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned, and to develop the students' oral fluency on the topic.

The teacher divides the class into two groups. Then the teacher asks them to read this situation, and discuss it with their group. The situation is: You discovered that your best friend's husband is in a relationship with another woman. How are you going to react? Are you going to tell her or not? What kind of advice or help you might offer her in such a situation? Discuss this issue with your group. Then the teacher discusses it with the two groups. The purpose of this activity is to develop the speaking skills of the students, as the Ss will speak with each other and their teacher.
