Description

In this lesson, students will improve teir reading skill (receptive skill ) by reading a text talking about the dangers of hero worship.They will be involved in gist reading ( skimming ), scanning and detailed reading" main aim". Also they will learn some new vocabulary through the teaching context"sub aim".

Main Aims

  • To practice reading skill " Receptive Skill " through skimming, scanning and detailed reading.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To learn some new vocabulary through the teaching context.

Procedure

Warmer/ Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and stimulate the students, schemata preparing them to the next step.

After greeting all students, I ask them if anyone knows about the "Star Wars " series " schemata". Then, I write " celebrity heroes on the board "and elicit the meaning. Then , I elicit the meaning of " hero worship " and ask the students to discuss in pairs if they agree or disagree with the idea of " hero worship ".

Gist ( Skimming Stage) (10-12 minutes) • To stimulate the students to skim the text in order to choose the best title

I give the students a handout having an article without a title . I ask them to read the article in order to choose the best title.I inform that the paragraphs are not in order so I ask them not to worry about it. Then, I check their answer.

Scanning Stage. (10-12 minutes) • To make the students more engaged in reading the text.

As I told the students in the previous stage that the paragraphs are not in the correct order so I ask them to put them in the correct order. Then, I ask them the ICQ. After they finish reading and arranging the paragraphs,I ask them to check their answers in pairs.Next, I check their answers.

Detailed Reading Stage. (10-15 minutes) • To get the students more involved in the details of the article and to make next stage " vocabulary Stage " easier through the teaching context.

I give the students a handout having some questions about some details in the article.So I ask the students to read the article in pairs again and discuss the questions.Then, we discuss the answers with each other.

Vocabulary Recognition. (6-8 minutes) • For the student to learn the meaning of some new vocabulary through the text.

I ask the students to look at the highlighted words in the article and match them to the definitions a - f.Then I check their answers eliciting the meaning of new words.
