Procedure (46-60 minutes)
I am going to start by providing pictures of someone trying to catch the train and Asking the students to describe the situation using the past tenses, and from there I will be able to start to explain about the past perfect simple.
The Past Perfect is formed with: – auxiliary verb ‘had’ (the Past Simple of ‘to have’) – main verb in the Past Participle form – verb base +ed / +d / irregular Past Perfect tense affirmative: subject + had + main verb negative: subject + had + not + main verb question: had + subject + main verb negative question: had + subject + not + main verb
I will be using the material that is attached to explain the format of the past perfect simple, as well as using CCQ to explain further on the past perfect simple. Drawing a time line and show the deference between the past simple and past perfect simple.
I will be using the attached exercise to administrate the use of the past perfect simple. This exercise will help the students to understand which action happened first. Also I will be able to monitor the students to know whether they have understood the format or there is difficulty.
As an extension from the Exposure, students will do exercise about filling the blanks using the past perfect simple. There are 20 Qs and this will help the students to understand the use of the target grammar. Ex When I arrived at the cinema, the film ________________( start ). Had started After that, Feedback and students check their answers together.
Students will be doing this exercise to practice the use of past perfect simple in a question form. EX ______________ (you/see) the film already? Had she seen
Asking each others questions using the target grammar, and write it down. That will help me see the over all picture with the students.
