Description

In this lesson,ss practice skim reading, gist and reading more intensively for details and deducing meaning from context. The lesson starts with a lead in to the reading by eliciting the topic of the text-a heavy cold-and getting the ss to discuss the symptoms. Get the ss to predict what the will read, then the ss do ex 1-and see if their predictions were correct. Ex 2 is to read more slowly and then check their answers in pairs.Ex 3 -ss in pairs find the words to match with defintions.Ex-4 ss will discuss the questions that given in the ex.wc give some FB.

Main Aims

  • To consolidate vocabulary of illness and symptoms.To practise spoken fluency.

Procedure

Heavy Cold (5-7 minutes) • To give practice in skim reading for gist,reading more intensivly for detaild comprehension and in deducing meaning from context.

-Warmer/lead in to activate schemata and engage the ss by introducing the topic and getting ss to discuss the symptoms. T-S,GW , 5-7 minutes.

(5-7 minutes)

-get the ss to predict what they will be reading. Give them choices in ex 1 & see if they can predict the purpose of the article.Ss skim read to see if their predictions were correct &decide which is the correct answer. Ss check their answer in pairs, then w/c FB & discuss reason for the correct answer.

(15-18 minutes)

-Give ss ex 2 & get them to read the sentences.Ss read the article more slowly & then check their answers in pairs. Deal with any problems in w/c FB. Get ss personal reaction to the text.

(10-12 minutes)

Ss in pairs/small groups discuss the questions in ex4.
