Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn how to introduce themselves and their friends, learn common English names, how to use titles with names, how to use possessive adjectives (e.g. my, your, etc.), the Alphabet, and listening for the correct spelling of names, in addition to saying hello.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussing personal information in the context of saying hello and getting to know each other.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of possessive adjectives in the context of saying your name.

Procedure

Warm-up (5-7 minutes) • Ss practice introducing themselves (e.g. My name is / I'm ....)

Ss stand in a circle. T holds a ball and tosses it to a S and says "I'm Wasseem" T asks the S to return the ball to the T. T repeats with another S. T gestures to a S to do the same. Ss keep throwing the ball to each other until they know each other's names.

Writing names (2-3 minutes) • Ss write their names on name cards

Ss each write their names on name cards and place them on their desks.

Conversation (10-11 minutes) • To practice a conversation between two people meeting for the first time, and to say (my and your in context)

T introduces himself to a S. T prompts the S to do the same. T writes "I'm Fadma / and I'm Wasseem, nice to meet you / nice to meet you too" T focuses on the illustration and the names. "Where are they?" "Who are they?" Ss listen to the conversation. Focus on "I'm sorry, what's your name again?" "too" Ss practice the conversation in pairs. Encourage Ss to Look up and Speak. Choose a pair to practice. Ss underline the names and replace them with their names. Ss practice with their own names.

Snapshot (5-6 minutes) • Ss learn some popular unisex names in English and talk about popular names.

Focus attention on the pictures "Do you know who this is?" Focus attention on the names. Make the distinction between male/female. Focus attention on the names. SS listen and repeat. Write "Male Female Both" on the board. Write a female Turkish name "Beyza"/ a male Turkish name "Burak"/ a name used for both "Bilge, Deniz, Toprak". Ask Ss to write them on the write place on the board. Write Maxwell on the board "Is it male or female? Male". Max for friends. Show a photo of Max my friend.

Grammar (10-12 minutes) • Practice my, your, his, and her; ask and answer questions with What's .... name?

give some more examples with 'my name is' 'his name is', 'your name is' ' her name is' Keep practicing until Ss get the hang of it. Play in a circle, each S tells the class about his/her classmate. Focus attention on the grammar. Ss Listen and repeat. Focus attention on the picutres and the names. Ss fill in the blanks for A. Ss compare in pairs. Ss do B the same. Ss practice in npairs.

Spelling Names (10-12 minutes) • Ss learn the English alphabet and how to spell names.

Ss listen to the first part of the recording. Ss listen again and repeat. Go around the class quickly and make sure Ss can read the alphabet well. Focus on the conversation and play the recording. Ss listen silently and then listen and repeat. Cross out the names and prompt Ss to do the same. Model the task with a strong S and prompt Ss to make a list of their classmates.

Listening (5-7 minutes) • Ss learn how to listen for correct spelling.

Ss read the pairs of names silently. Ss read the pairs of names aloud. Model the first pair with the class. Prompt Ss to do the same.

Word power (6-8 minutes) • Ss learn how to use titles for men and women

Ask: Am I a man or a woman? Man Male or female? Female. Am I single or married? Married (show the ring) Do the same with the rest of the class. Draw stick figures on the board (married and single) Focus on the titles and play the recording. Draw attention to using titles with last names or full names.
