Procedure (34-45 minutes)
First I divide them into groups and then I show them a picture through the projector for an employer and a candidate and I ask them to discuss some questions:- 1- What do you think of this picture? 2- Are they teachers in a school? 3- Are they an employer and a person who wants to get a job? 4- Are they in a hospital or in a company? Through all of this I am trying to explain the word "interview" and what is happening during it.
* I explain for them some blocking words like "embarrassed, disaster, CV, lean". 1- I show them a card of a person who is shy, worried, and doesn't know how to do and ask them some questions to elicit the meaning. 2- I tell them how we can pronounce the word. I pronounce it 2 times.3- I write it on the board. 4- I ask them for drilling and repeating after me. * I repeat the previous stages with the other words. * I check their understanding for the words by asking some CCQs.
1- I show the students some questions on the projector like:- * Did Laura get the job? * Did Andy get the job? * Has Dan changed his CV? * Was Ellie happy at the end? 2- I ask them to read the text quickly and silently to get the overall meaning of the text and be able to answer the questions in pairs. 3- They answer Ex. b in the book. 4- Feedback (I check their answers).
1- I show the students some questions on the projector like:- * How long has Laura worked in the company? * Did Andy switch off his mobile phone during the interview? * Which language did the interviewers use with Dan at the beginning? * Did Ellie go outside the room? 2- I ask the students to read quickly and silently the text again to be able to answer the questions in pairs. 3- They answer Ex. c in the book. 4- Feedback (I check their answers).
* I apply with them the "jigsaw reading". 1- I divide the students into 5 groups of 4 (A - B - C - D - E). 2- I name the students in each group as 1 - 2 - 3 - 4. (The text has 4 segments). 3- I tell the students that they will be given handouts of the text and some questions. They should read the questions first and then they read the text. These questions are like:- (1- What did the interviewers want to test Laura? 2- What did the interviewer say to Laura to do? 3- Has Andy ever forgotten to switch his mobile phone? 4- Why did Andy's friend phone him? 5- What did Dan write in his CV? 6- Did Dan understand his interviewers? Why? 7- What was Ellie's reaction when the interviewer fell right back? 8- What did the other interviewer ask Ellie to do? Each segment of the task has only 2 questions). 4- (I have already prepared photocopies of the segments of the text). So, I give each student only one segment with its two questions. 5- I give the students some time (only 2 minutes) to read the segment and answer its questions. 6- I form "expert groups". I put "1" students with each other, "2" students with each other, "3" students with each other, and "4" students with each other. This is in order to share their answers with each other and fully understand the segment of the the text. 7- I ask the students to return to their groups and share the answers. * During all of this, I monitor my students, watch them, write down any mistakes to discuss later on the board, and help them understand anything if they want. * Feedback (I check their answers).
* I help them do a questionnaire in pairs. * I tell them that I am going to give them some handouts which have some referential questions. * I ask them to stand up and do a "mix, pair, share" game. * I tell them that I am going to play music. During that, they should go through the class. once I stop it, each one of them should give her partner five and start asking her the questions. These questions are like"- 1- Have you ever had an interview? 2- Which job would you like to apply for after school? 3- Would you like working in a company? 4- What will you write in your CV? Also, I can use the questions in Ex. a and Ex. d in the questionnaire. During all of that, I monitor my students and watch them.
