Description

In this lesson students will be engaged into role play, which they have previously learnt some phrases and vocabulary about. Pre-teaching of further vocabulary and phrases will precede the role play so that the students wouldn't find it difficult to engage and carry on with the role play, finalizing the lesson with acting out of the role play for the class and error correction.

  • To provide clarification of Health in the context of At the doctor's

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Draw a sad person on the WB and ask students if they can describe the person's feelings and problem. Ask then students about the verb that is used to give advice, if they don't know it, I write the question: "What should he do"? on the WB.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language trough phrases and pictures

Put a picture on the WB and tell students to work in threes and shortly come up with a phrase and adjectives which describe the picture. I continue putting the other pictures one by one and telling the students to do the same as above.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

After they finish describing the pictures, I stick phrases that express health problems and tell a student (a strong one) to follow the others students' orders and stick the phrases next to the pictures showing health problems.

Clarification (3-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher checks for the right pronunciation of the words and phrases stuck next to the pictures.

Controlled Practice (8-11 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are shown some pieces of letter with phrases on them which they will work in threes and put them in order. After they finish, the teacher gives them the answer key which they check in group.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students are told that they are going to do a role play in twos, one is the doctor and the other is the patient. Before they start, I call a student so as to demonstrate the activity, and tell them to start practising the role pay. I monitor the activity in the meantime.

Free Practice (4-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

After I monitor the role play for a bit, teacher tells them to swap roles and continue the role play using as many phrases learnt so far. If there is time enough, teacher finishes the lesson by giving any error correction.
