Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of past simple tense in the context of our past memories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about life in the past vs present life in the context of childhood memories

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

show students a picture of myself when I was a child to notice the difference to activate their schemata and brainstorm ideas about their childhood. ask students to speak about their life 10 years ago and share their memories. Introduce their stories in front of the class.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher gives out a short story and asks learners to read it individually.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher asks students underline examples of the past simple in the text.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher clarifies the form with examples on the board and then gives out a series of rules of the use of the verb form. I will read out loud the past simple form of the verbs I previously gave them and ask the students to repeat after me.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

the teacher asks questions to check their understanding.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

learners complete sentences to decide whether the past simple or continuous is appropriate.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The teacher divides students into three groups. Each group makes up a story using the past tense
