Description

In this lesson, the Ss will study zero and first conditionals in the context of going green. They will also learn conjunctions such as when, whenever and unless. We will also study a lexis related to going green.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of zero and first conditionals in the context of going green

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of lexis in the context of going green

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will first inform the Ss that we are going to study grammar in the context of protecting the environment. I will stick on th WB a picture of international recycling symbol. I will ask the Ss to guess what it means. I assume that they know the symbol. I will ask the Ss whether they recycle. If yes, how? Then I will show them the second picture with the words "reuse, reduce, recycle". I will clarify their meanings by eliciting. I will elicit examples such as reusing clothes, paper, envelopes; reducing bills, energy consumption, waste; recycling paper, metal, plastic, glass. While talking about reduce, I will introduce the words "consumption", "waste", "unplug" and "carpool". Lastly I will introduce the concept of going green by saying that people who reuse, reduce and recycle go green, and that's a lifestyle. Then I will ask "What happens when people go green?", "Why they go green?" and stick on the WB the sentence "If they go green, they protect the environment".

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide the meaning of the target language through a series of sentences in the context of going green

I will tell the Ss that I want to go green. I will stick on the WB first the paper strip containing the if clause "I use recycled paper". Then I will ask the Ss "What happens if I use recycled paper?" When they answer I put "If" at the beginning of the first strip, and stick on the WB the result sentence: "I save trees." I continue with 5 more examples.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will highlight that the second sentence is the result of if clause. Then I will ask CCQs: CCQs: 1. Is this always true? (Yes) 2. Are we talking about a single event or a general truth? (A general truth) 3. Is the result 100% for sure? (Yes) Then I will show the form as If+present simple, present simple. I will show negaitve and question forms. I will explain that the order of the clauses can be changed. I will explain use of when/whenever and unless instead of if. An example for "unless": Unless I watch it, I unplug the TV. I will drill the sentences.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will give the instructions. I will ask ICQs. I will ask the Ss to work in their pairs, and give the handouts. I will monitor during the activity and will correct the common mistakes. I will give the Ss the answer sheet.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will stick the sentences on the WB as I did for the zero conditional. I will elicit that the result is now and in the future. I will ask CCQs: CCQs: 1. Are we talking about the present or the future? (Future) 2. Is it possible this will happen in the future? (Yes) 3. Are we sure that the condition is going to happen? (No) 4. Are we sure that the result will happen? (Yes) Then I will show the form as If+present simple, will+V1. I will show negaitve and question forms. I will explain that the order of the clauses can be changed. I will explain use of when/whenever and unless instead of if and if not. I will drill the sentences.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I will give the instructions. I will ask ICQs. I will ask the Ss to work in their pairs, and give the handouts. I will monitor during the activity and will correct the common mistakes.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

If there is any time left over, the Ss will discuss the questions in the handouts.
