Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of present simple and present continuous in the context of conversation between Karina and her colleague about her birthday photos and the people on them.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed, gist and specific information listening practice using a text about present simple and present continuous in the context of same context

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

After greetings, the teacher will give the students pieces of chocolate and tell them "I celebrated my birthday last Friday and it was a nice party because I invited my mother and my three brothers, of Corse with husband and my lovely son" Then the teacher asks the Ss "when did the last time you celebrate a birthday, your birthday or someone you love?" and waits for their answers. After that tells them so does Karina our main character for today, she celebrated her twenty-first birthday and took some photos and she is showing a colleague these photos (the teacher show them the photos during that) and telling him who these people are. The teacher continues talking "and now we will listen to this conversation between Karin and her friend to figure out who these people are"

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher shows the Ss the sheet with the three photos from Karin birthday party and tells them to listen carefully and focus on what Karina will say because they are going to need it but for now just write her relationship to each person on these photos during the listening, Ask an ICQ (What are you going to write now?) , then gives them their hands out. After they finished the teacher asks them to check their answers with a partner.

Highlighting (10-12 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher shows them another sheet with sentences to complete depending on what they just listened to and ask them to work alone to complete these sentences and demonstrate the first one with them to make sure they understand the instructions. Then asks them to work in pairs and check their answers with a partner, then they will listen again to make sure that their answer is correct. Finally in this stage, the teacher asks them if they noticed that we used two tenses in these phrases, the present simple and present continuous, and tells them to highlight the present simple verbs like this────and the present continuous verbs like this ˬˬˬˬˬˬˬˬˬˬ

Clarification (13-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher in this stage divides the board into two parts, one of them is the present simple and the other one will be the present continuous. #The teacher starts with the present simple and tells the students that we use the present simple tense in three cases, the first one is the (habits) and clarify the habit for them as something usually happens on an action we usually do, then the teacher asks the Ss to look at the HO1 and tell which phrase in the paragraph means a habit, they should answer (She stays with us every weekend), then the teacher writes the phrase on the board as the positive form and interspace for the negative form and the question. After that the teacher tells them the other two cases: 2- A permanent situation; which means continuing forever, for a very long time, or for the rest of someone's life. (She lives upstairs). 3- A state; which means something doesn't change (facts). (Holly looks like Karina.) Then the teacher clarifies the negative form: 1-She doesn't stay with us every weekend. 2-She doesn't live upstairs. 3-Holly doesn't look like Karina. The question form: 1-Does she stay with us every weekend? 2-Does she lives upstairs? 3- Does Holly look like Karina? Then THE T clarifies the other forms from the language analysis sheet and drills the sentences with the students. # After that the teacher starts talking about the present continuous cases: 1- An action happening at this moment; which means the action starts and still happening. (They are looking at the photos.) 2- A temporary situation; which means that something happened just for a while (are happening around now). (He's staying with his aunt) 3- Changing situation; this means that something changes by the time. (He's getting really tall). Then the teacher clarifies the negative form: 1- They aren't looking at the photos. 2- He isn't staying with his aunt. 3- He isn't getting really tall. The question form: 1- Are they looking at the photos? 2- Is he staying with his aunt? 3- Is he getting really tall? Then clarifies the other forms from the language analysis sheet, and drills the sentences with the students. Practice 1: After they knew the MFP, the teacher tells them the instruction for practice 1 that they have to choose the correct tense for five sentences and give them the HO2 and asks them to work alone. Then the T asks them to check their answers with their partners.

Activity 1 (Controlled) (1-3 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

After they knew the MFP, the teacher tells them the instruction for practice 1 that they have to choose the correct tense for five sentences and gives them the HO2, and asks them to work alone. Then the T asks them to check their answers with their partners.

Activity 2 (Semi-Controlled) (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

In this practice, the teacher asks the Ss to complete the questions (in you form) in the present simple and the present continuous tenses, and demonstrate the first one with them. 1- Do you like meeting new people? And asks an ICQ (which form are we going to use?) Then the teacher gives them HO3 and tells them to start after they finished the teacher asks them to check their answers with their partners. Finally, the last part of this activity the teacher asks them to work as a group and find someone who….? By asking each other these questions. Then the feedback

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The teacher asks every student to write in an empty sheet his/her name and the names of six important people in their lives, then to fold it and put all the sheets together. After that the teacher asks them to work as a group and play in role, every student will pick a piece of sheet and starts asking the one who wrote it about the names on it (who are they? And what they do? And what they are doing at the moment?......) Then the T gives feedback.

Activity 4 freer (5 minutes) • If we still have time in our lesson.

The teacher asks the Ss to write a paragraph about themselves using the three cases of the present simple tense and the three cases of the present continuous tense. Then after they finished the teacher asks them to show what they wrote to their partners to read it and ask questions about these paragraphs. EX: I'm reading a very good book this week. The partner can ask about the name of the book. The teacher gives feedback.
