In this lesson the students will reviewthe past simple tense, including the past of the verb 'to be' and regular and irregular verbs.

Main Aims

  • for the students to become more confident in using the past continuous in speaking

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

As this is my first lesson with this class, I will begin by introducing myself and give the students a chance to ask me a few questions. Then I will ask them about the article they read to create a context for the grammar task.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Sts Fill in the blanks on the sheet with the correct verb from the article. The first time sts do it without looking at the article trying to remember. Then, sts check their answers in the article. Followed by WC check.

Highlighting (5-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Work in 2 teams each st take a card a write the verb and its past tense form on the board. Take turns, the first team to finish wins. Check the answers as a WC. Give sts time to write the words.

Clarification (5-10 minutes) • To clarify the form of the TL

I will write on the board the form of positive, negative and Y/N questions for the past simple as tables, I will get the students to come up with some ideas for what can be put in each box.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Sts work in pairs or small groups. ask questions about your partners weekend. "did you go to the cinema?" "yes I did" "no, I didn't" find three things they did. followed by WC check. then if there is enough time I will do a wc feedback of errors made in the activity
