Description

In this lesson students will be introduced to the lexical set of cooking and eating. Students will practice the lexis talking about what they use for cooking in their own kitchen, their favourite dishes and how to make them. Sts will watch a silent video and describe the kitchen and tell each other what the chef is doing in the video. They will watch the video again with sound and do a gap fill exercise which will be followed with a speaking activity talking about a recipe they'll prepare in pairs.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide review, practice and clarification of vocabulary used for kitchen utensils, and cooking In the context of Cooking and Eating.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice with listening for specific information in a video watching Nigella Lawson cook an Eton Mess in the context of Cooking and eating.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation talking about cooking, how to cook and telling each other about a recipe of their own in the context of Cooking and Eating.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks: What did you have for dinner last night? Elicit ideas. Did you cook it yourself? Get answers. Do you know how to cook? Just get yes or no answers. Do you enjoy cooking?

Exposing to vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To introduce lexis through a match exercise - Kitchen utensils

What do you mostly use in the kitchen for cooking? Brainstorm and write difficult words on WB. Chest HO (Cooking Utensils Match) – Match words to pictures. (10 pictures) monitor Check in pairs, do you all know what these are? get answers T asks : What other utensils do you use in your kitchen? FB Put words they come up with on WB

Speaking practice to check prior knowledge of cooking vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • To provide practice with vocabulary introduced and prepare for the next set of vocabulary

I had menemen this morning. I really like it. Do you know how to make it? Ok, i like menemen with lots of peppers. Can you tell each other how you like it and make it? Monitor for verbs sts use, make notes. Get one pair to tell WC how they make it.

Exposing to cooking vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To introduce and review vocabulary for Cooking

T: HO worksheet 2 FOLDED - (vocabulary for cooking) Look at the list of verbs used for cooking. Ask if there are any words they don't know or not sure about. T: Write the verbs they don't know on WB and drill. OPEN and see definition.

Speaking Practice with a silent video (11-13 minutes) • To provide practice with cooking lexical set through a silent video activity

T: Do you know what MERENGUE is? (show picture if they don't know) T: Have you ever had ETON MESS? Tell them they'll see it in the video. T: We will now watch a famous British Chef Nigella Lawson making ETON MESS. But first put sts into groups. Only one student faces the screen. Give them a sheet to write on. Tell sts there will be no sound and they should try to use verbs learnt and say what they can see to their group. Others make notes. ICQ: Are you going to make notes? Yes ICQ: Are you allowed to look? No Play the video Stop video and rotate so all get a chance to speak. T monitor and collect errors. T ask groups to tell the WC in order how the Chef made the desert. Write on WB and drill verbs if necessary. Immediate error correction at this FB stage.

Listening for specific information - Video with sound (8-10 minutes) • To provide practice with listening for specific information

Students stay where they are. Chest HO Gap Fill Exercise, tell them they will watch the video with sound no. T asks read the sentences FIRST then fill in the gaps with verbs they'll hear. Play the video with sound. Check in pairs and WC FB - error correction where necessary.

Freer Speaking Practice with a silent video (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with speaking for fluency practice

Ask sts to think of a simple dish they know how to cook. T asks sts take 2 minutes to think of the ingredients and make notes on how it's made. Use verbs learnt. Sts explain the recipe in pairs. Listen and do error correction. If time : T asks sts repeat exercise with someone else. I hope at this point it all went well and everyone is smiling :)
