Description

In this lesson, students practice lexis of transportation through the matching activities, interview questions. The lesson starts with eliciting the word "transportation" and students match types of transportation to the pictures. There is another matching activity in which students match phrases with verbs. For the production activity, student practice the lexis in an information gap activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start the lesson by asking students their favorite clothes. Ask students where they buy their clothes and how they travel there to link the lesson to the previous one. Elicit some answers from students Show the picture of the types of transportation and elicit the word 'transportation'. Show the pictures of a coach and the tube on the slides and clarify the MFP. Write the form on the WB and model and drill chorally and individually.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show students the pictures put on the wall (door) in advance and tell them to match the words with the pictures. Model the instructions. Deliver the cut version of the handout1 to each student and ask them to stick it under the correct picture. Ask student if they agree with the answers and have them correct if there any mistakes. Show the words: "motorbike, scooter and ferry" and model and drill them chorally and individually. Elicit the stress and mark it on the form.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Show students the handout2 and ask them to match the phrases with the pictures. Model the instructions on the WB. Students work individually for three minutes Monitor and help as necessary. Students check their answers with their partners. Whole class feedback takes place A student comes to the board and does the first one. S/he stays there and nominates students.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ask students to remove the previous matching task. Show the cut version of the handout3 and handout4 and ask them to match the phrases with the verbs. Instructions: There are seven phrases and seven verbs in different colored papers. You will match them. Work with your partner. When you find the correct match, you will say the phrases and verbs together and get one point. You have five minutes. Model the instructions clearly by demonstrating them on the students' desk. Deliver students the handout3 and handout4 Students work in pairs. Monitor genuinely and make sure that students say the words. Partners check their answers with other partners. Whole class feedback is carried out.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Display students the handout5 and tell student to unjumble the sentences. Students work individually for three minutes. Monitor carefully and help as necessary. Students check their answer in pairs. Put the answer key (the handout5 key) on the wall. Show students the handout6 and ask them to answer the questions Instrustions: Fold the paper in two. Answer the questions and write them in your answers part. Write your answers in full sentences Model the instructions on the WB. Students work individually for four minutes. Instructions: Unfold your paper and ask the questions to your partners and takes notes on his/her answers in your partners' answers part. You have three minutes. Student work in pair. Monitor genuinely and take notes on students' good use of language and mistakes for delayed feedback. Instructions: Stand up and ask questions to another friend and take notes. Talk at least to three different friends. Whole class feedback takes place Provide students with delayed feedback on good use of language and correct mistakes. If time, ask students discuss about their favorite types of transportation.
