Procedure (35-45 minutes)
T sets context on phobias and shows a short video from the movie IT. Then T shows some discussion questions the whiteboard and asks students to read the questions and discuss with their partners for 3 minutes. Instruction: Read the questions and discuss with your partners. You have 3 minutes. Questions: 1- What are you afraid of? 2- Which insects or animals do you find frightening? 3-Have you ever been frightened on an aeroplane? 4- Do you know anyone with any unusual fears? What are they? Ss work together for this activity. W/c FB is carried out. T elicits some answers from the students about their phobias.
T sticks the photos of the characters on the board and introduces them. Then T sticks some phobia pictures on the whiteboard and elicits names of the phobias(fear of buttons, balloons, the scale of fish) from the ss and asks ss to guess who has which phobia. Instruction: Look at pictures and guess who has which phobia. You have 1 minute. Ss think individually first. Then ss share their ideas with their partners. W/c FB T elicits some guesses from the ss but doesn't say the answers.
T asks students to listen to the text and check their guesses. Instruction: Listen to the text and check your guesses about phobias. Ss listen to the text individually. Ss check their guesses with their partners. W/c FB takes place. T elicits ss' guesses from the students.
T gives HO1 to students and asks students to look at questions for 30 seconds. Then T asks: Instruction: Listen to the text and answer the questions for Jodie, Gavin, Melissa. ICQ: Are we going to listen to all the text or just Jodie first? Ss will listen to each person respectively. Ss check their answers in pairs. Ss will listen to text one more time but this time there won't be any pause. Ss will check their answers with their partners. W/c FB is carried out. T asks for some justification. Questions: 1-How did their phobia start? 2-How does it affect their lives? 3-What caused their panic attack? 4-Have they tried to cure their phobia? Follow-up: Ss will have a cartoon which includes a discussion question. (HO2) Question: Which part of the cartoon would make them panic? Instruction: Look at the cartoon and read the questions. Share your ideas with your groups. Ss work in groups for this activity. Ss change their groups and share their ideas with their new partners. W/c FB takes place. T elicits some ideas from the students.
T gives some questions (HO3) to the groups and asks them to discuss. Questions: 1-Which of three people do you think has the most difficult phobia to live with? Why? 2- Why do people get phobias? 3- Why do some people and not others get them? 4-How do you think they can be cured? Suggest ideas. Ss have a group discussion. W/c FB takes place. T gets some ideas from the students. Follow-up: T gives some phobia cards (HO4) to the students and asks them if they had this phobia how would they feel? Instruction: Read the cards and think if you had this phobia how would you feel? Ss work with their partners for this activity. W/c Takes Place.
