Description

In this lesson, ss will be provided to practice reading for gist, specific info. and detail in the context of the kitchen. Since it's a receptive skills lesson pre-, while-, post- stages are followed. In the post-stage, ss will be practicing speaking for fluency in the context of kitchen.

Main Aims

  • To provide ss practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T sets the context on a kitchen. Instruction: Close your eyes and think of your kitchen at home. Who is in it? What's happening? What are you doing? What can you smell? Ss share their feelings with their partners. W/c FB takes place.

Pre-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T gives HO1 and asks ss to read the introduction part of the reading text and answer the questions. Instruction: Read the text quickly and answer the questions. You have 2 minutes for this activity. ICQ: Are you reading quickly or slowly? 1-Do you agree that the kitchen is the heart of the home? 2-Is it where your family get together? Ss work individually. Ss share their ideas with their partners. W/c FB takes place.

While-Reading #1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T introduces the characters of the reading text and sticks their pictures on the whiteboard. T gives reading texts (HO2) to the ss as a,b,c and asks them to read the text quickly and answer the question. This is reading for gist. Instruction: Read the text quickly and answer the question: Is the kitchen the heart of the home for Elizabeth, Santina, Lakshmamma? You have 4 minutes for this activity. ICQ: Are you reading quickly or slowly? Are you reading together or individually? Ss read the text individually. Ss share their ideas with their partners but there are three different texts so A shares with A, B with B and C with C. W/c FB takes place.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T gives a specific reading task. (HO3) Instruction: Read the text again and answer the questions. You have 6 minutes for this activity. Questions: 1-What does she do? 2-Where does her husband do? 3-Where does she live? 4-What's her house like? 5-How does she feel about her kitchen? 6-Is her life easy or difficult? 7-What does her family eat? 8-Does she seem to be happy? 9-What do you think she worries about? T gives HO3 to the ss. Ss work individually for this task. They check their answers with their partners. A with A, B with B, C with C. Then A, B, C come together and compare their ideas with their groups. W/c FB takes place.

While-Reading #3 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T gives HO4 to the students. T asks ss to read the text again find who may say those sentences: "I can never decide where to go swimming, I live my life tune with nature, I'd love to have a new kitchen, If anyone wants me, I'm weeding and watering, We have found you a very nice girl. Why won't you marry her?" Instruction: Read the text again and find which person may say these sentences. You have 5 minutes for this activity. Ss work in groups for this activity. Ss check their answers with their partners. W/c FB takes place. T asks why students think like this and elicit answers from them.

Post-Reading (8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T gives a speaking activity which includes some detailed questions about the kitchen. (HO5) Instruction: read the questions and talk about your kitchen. you have 5 minutes for this activity. ICQ: Are you working together or individually for this activity? How many minutes you have? Ss work together for this activity and share their opinions. Questions: 1- What food do you remember when somebody says home? 2- What is your kitchen like? 3- What’s your favourite thing in it? 4- What’s in your fridge? 5- How often do you sit down and eat together as a family? 6- What can you see from your kitchen windows W/c FB takes place.
