Description

In this lesson ,the students will learn new vocabularies about the places in a city.Also the students will practise pronunciation of the places and stress patterns.

Abc Handout (photocopy)
Abc printed pictures
Abc Whiteboard

Main Aims

  • to familiarize the students with the vocabulary about places in a city

Subsidiary Aims

  • to give the students a chance to practice their pronunciation.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To introduce the the theme cities teacher draws a map of Istanbul on the board and asks to the Ss What can you see in the city? Where do you go in the city? What are the famous places? Teacher elicits as many words as possible.

Listening 1 (8-9 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Teacher gives Ss hand outs. Asks Ss to match the words to the signs. Then puts them in pairs and let them compare their answers with a partner. Then teacher tells them to listen to the recording and check their answers. Teacher might play the recording more than once if necessary. Ss repeat the words after teacher (train station,airport, museum,hotel,park,castle,bridge,river,beach)

Task (9-11 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

teacher asks Ss to describe a city in the country.Puts them in pairs.Each pair then describes the city they thought of without saying which city it is.The rest of the class must guess which city they are describing.

Listening 2 (10-12 minutes) • to practise listening for word stress

Teacher gives Ss hand outs .Tells Ss that they are going to listen a recording and plays the recording. Ss listen to the words and stress patterns. After listening Ss repeat the words after teacher. Teacher puts the words below on the board and asks Ss to put the words in the correct column. Let them check their answers in pairs. bridge beach station city hotel police Then teacher play the recording. Ss listen and check. Then teacher asks Ss to practice saying the words in pairs.

Wrap up (4-5 minutes) • To give the students an opportunity to react to what they have learned

Before finishing the lesson teacher holds up pictures of hotels ,bridges, parks, rivers, etc. for a drill.
