Description

In this lesson, the students will be engaged in interviews of two different people and will read for both gist and detail. They will be expected to practise their reading based receptive skills and also will have the opportunity of developing their speaking based productive skills. The lesson is designed to help the students to develop their creativity and productivity through reading exercises.

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead-in) (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the lesson through a brainstorming activity in the context of food and restaurants.

-Write foreign restaurants on the board. -Then elicit from SS different kinds of foreign restaurants in their town, e.g. Chinese, Italian, Thai, Vietnamese etc. - Write the on the board and ask SS which they think are the most popular and why. -Then ask them if they think food from their country is popular abroad, and if yes, which dishes in particular.

Stage 2 (3-5 minutes) • To pre-teach some words that the students will read about.

The teacher will pre-teach the words diet and cut down by providing ECDW. cut down: eat less of something CQs: Are you eating less than you normally eat? diet (in this context): the food people eat regularly (the students probably know the meaning that is to eat less food in order to lose weight). CQs: Does each country have their own diet?

Stage 3 (5-10 minutes) • To get the students to read the reading text and work with their partners on exercise 1b.

Explain that they are going to read part of an article where women from different countries were interviewed about their attitudes to food and diet. Ask them to read the interview of Alice and Jacqueline and match the questions with their answers. (Exercise 1b) After they finish, get them into pairs to compare answers. Then, the teacher will provide the answer sheet and the students will check their answers with their partners. The teacher will monitor and pick up points. If needed, give delayed feedback.

Stage 4 (3-5 minutes) • To get the students to read the reading text again and work with their partners on exercise 1c.

The teacher will ask the learners to read the reading text again and work on exercise 1c alone. Then, they will be expected to work with their partner to compare answers. The teacher will monitor and pick up some points where the students have difficulty. After they finish, the teacher will go through each question and provide correct answers.

Stage 5 (3-5 minutes) • To get the students match the highlighted words or phrases with their definitions.

-The teacher will ask the students to work on exercise 1d first alone then with a partner to compare answers. -The teacher will monitor and help the learners for the words they have difficulty. -Then, give delayed feedback. If needed, model and drill certain words.

Stage 6 (3-5 minutes) • To get them students talk with each other based on their knowledge of the topic.

The teacher will ask the following question: Which of the two women do you think has the healthier diet? Why? They will be expected with their partners and then share their ideas with whole class.

Stage 7 (Follow-up) (5-10 minutes) • To help the students their speaking based productive skills through exercise 1f.

They will be expected to interview with each other with the questions from 1b. How similar are your eating habits? They can interview with different people and the teacher will pick up points for delayed feedback. If time permits, put SS in pairs, A and B. A then tells B from memory how Alice answered the questions and B does the same for Jacqueline.
