Description

In this lesson, students will learn about (Used to) in its positive and negative form. They will develop the ability to talk about past habits using (used to) in the context of childhood. They will finally get the chance to use the target language in a game where they describe what things in general used or didn't use to be in the past.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of used to in the context of childhood habits.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of how things in life used to look like.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-12 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- stick pictures around the class of childhood activities. - Give the students time to discuss - whether or not they did these activities in the past. - whether or not they do them now. - give them sheets of papers and ask them to write down 3 things themselves did in the past but don't do now. - Ask them to stand up and mingle in the class to see who shared the same memories with them.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

*I will show them a picture of a girl playing football and tell them that when I was a child I used to play football. *CCQs: -Did I play in the past or present? (past) - Once or many times? (many times) - Do I play football now? (no)

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

*I will show a scale of where the activity starts and ends. *Drill: I used to play football (basketball) I used to play basketball. (listen to music) I used to listen to music. * I will show a picture of a child refusing to drink milk. (I didn't use to drink milk) - I will also show pictures of negative things and highlight with didn't we write use to instead of used to.

Controlled Practice (2-3 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will give them a sheet of paper with a controlled practice to fill the blanks with (used to- didn't use to)

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Blast from the past: I will divide the class into groups. each group will get a set of cards they have to place them face down. Demonstrate the activity and show them that they have to describe the picture using (used to/ didn't use to). each student must speak for at least (20) seconds if they fail they score no points. the student with the most points is the winner.
