Description

In this lesson students will read about the success story of KFC in the context of the biography of its founder. After the analysis of some unfamiliar lexis they will practice a reading for gist, specific information and a detailed reading to answer the given questions. In the post reading stage students, in pairs, will do a role play and act as a famous fast food founder and talk about their secret recipe and pretend to cook their special food which will be shared at the end of the lesson

Main Aims

  • To give students practice reading for skimming, scanning and in detail, using a short biography of the founder of KFC.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking for fluency in a discussion about what to do when put themselves in Famous Fast Food Founders' shoes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The lesson starts with a warmer about fast food. The teacher elicits some words related to fast food by using pictures of fast food companies.The teacher asks about their favorite fast food restaurant, the food company in their country and what theses company sell?Then, sts try to guess what KFC stands for and who the man in the picture of KFC logo is.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. T asks them to write their prediction about the topic of the text. and put them on the board. 2. Put the pre-reading pictures of blocking words on the board (service station, secret, spokesman, recipe,ingredients). Elicit, concept check, drill and write the words on the board highlighting the stress. Then, they work in groups to discuss some questions about fast food. Sts share interesting answers with WC. CCQS "Do yo tell your secrets to everyone?" "Do you tell your friends' secrets to one or two people?"

While-Reading #1 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist information reading tasks

1) Holdup HO and explain. You will read a short article about Colonel Sanders and answer some questions. First, you will read quickly. Then you will put these events in order - point to exercise 2a. Put them in order - first to last. Read quickly - you have 5 minutes. Work with someone new - in pairs. ICQ " Are you going to read in 5 minutes?" " Are you going to read fast?" 2) Students read and put events in order, in pairs. (5 minutes) 3) WC - ask someone to come up to whiteboard and label the events in order (1-6). Ask the rest to check the answers. Go through anything that they seem confused about 4) After that ask them what was the text about? and which one has guessed the topic correctly? and give a point to him/her.

While-Reading #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information reading tasks

The ss are regrouped and scan the text to answers T/F questions. First, they read the text on their own and answer the questions , then compare their answers with their group mates. The teacher demonstrates how to do the activity by doing the first one. ICQ "how are you going to answer the questions.?" Ss : by T/F after that, T ask them to come to the board and draw their answers with emoji. After that T shows them the answers and ask them to check.

While-Reading #3 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

1) Hold up HO. Now you will answer some questions about the article. Here are the questions - 6 questions (Exercise 2b). Read the article again. Read more slowly this time. With your partner, answer the questions. (10 minutes) If you need help, raise your hand. 2) Monitor progress and answer questions about the text. 3) If you have finished, check your answers with the group.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1) T ask them to look at the highlighted words and guess their meaning by their partners. and tell them two of them are opposite, find them . (3 min) 2) T : "good job, dears. now lets have some play. Imagine that you are the owner of a famous restaurant. Today, you want to show your secret recipe to the others .At first choose a name as your brand. write its name or its first letter on your cap. (after they do it, T tell the rest of play). now choose your special food, write its name on your papers, and then write its ingredients and how to cook it. (you can use from the ingredients that I put on the board)T gives them an example. and give them 3 minutes to do that after they did, T tell them to speak about their recipe to whole class. 4 min
