Procedure (31-42 minutes)
Ss answer questions asked by the teacher about creating an account on social media in order to draw on the students' knowledge and schemata. The questions are the following: - Do you have an account on Facebook/Twitter? - Does your name include a number or a symbol? - Have you tried choosing a username which was already taken?
Pre-teach blockers which students might not know by giving them a gap-filling exercise with the words in a box. Ss do the exercise in pairs. Then, they can pair with another partner to check their answers. T shows the answer on the board and Ss make sure they have the correct answers. T drills the new words to be certain that Ss pronounce them correctly.
1. Reading for gist: Ss answer question one ( how many accounts does he have? by skimming the text. (AK: 4 accounts with the sign @ before each of them in the text) 2. Reading for specific information: A. Ss are given 5 comprehension questions about the text to answer. Ss are asked to check their answers in pairs. Ss share their answers and explain why they chose them. T shows the answers on the board (AK: 1. to publicize Rio in the Olympics 2. a graphic designer, because of the economy 3. He thinks it is a gift 4. he contacts officials, they confirm their ID, and he sends them the password. 5. 3 account names. B. Ss do the true/false exercise and check the answers with their partners. T shows the the right answer on the board. (AK: 1. F Spanish, in the title 2. F he did 3. T ('at last' in line 8) 4. T, great value line 9 5. F, reservation line 19.
T shows the following questions on the board for a pair work discussion: 1. What would you do if you were asked to give away your social media account? 2. Would you charge money for it? 3. Have you made money through social media or YouTube? Do you think it is an easy way to make money? 4. Is it more important to benefit your society or to make a fortune? 5. Do you think what Castano did was rewarding enough?
