In this lesson, students will watch a short video which is related to crime and punishment in the 18th century because the reading on page 110 is about this to identify the context with some CCQs and discussion. Then they will be familiarized with the lesson vocabulary by some photos. Afterwards, They will discuss some questions in pairs/groups (depends on the number of students) and will have a short discussion about the answers altogether in class. Next, they will move on some activities about new words and then they will begin the text to read and answer related questions as the last step.

Materials

Abc Handout from Cutting Edge Intermediate Students' book (page 110) by Sarah Cunningham, Peter Moore an

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Crime and punishment words in the reading text on page 110 in the context of The harsh world of 18-century justice with an activity to convey the bold words in the text.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about Crime and Punishmet words in the context of the harsh world of 18-century justice and a famous criminal from the 18-century on page 110 with an activity to introduce some new vocabulary about crime and punishment.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students about the harsh world of 18-century justice

Play a short video which might be around 1-3 minutes to set the context which is about the harsh world of 18-century justice and after finishing the video they will discuss it in pairs. Then I will ask them to share their opinions of the video in class and I write their some of their opinions on the board. Afterwars, I will have some CCQs to make sure they get the context. Such as: Is it about the past? is it talking about crimes? what about punishments?

Pre-reading vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text bold words which might be tough and make them accessible

I will have some handouts which are related to bold words in the text with their meanings as an activity that they have to match the words with their meanings. After that I will tell each group to check other group answers while doing this activity, I will be monitoring them. We will definitely have drilling and stress on each word separately. Then I will write two questions on the board which are on page 110 and ask them to investigate the questions in class altogether.

While-Reading for gist (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks.

Then it is time to distribute those handouts which are copies of page 110 (Cutting Edge students' book) and ask them to fold the paper ( because I want them to have their whole concentration on the first text) and read the first text in 3 minutes individually (I will tell them that it's not necessary to understand all words in the text). The next step, I will tell them to answer the questions in pairs and then I will tell a pair to ask other pair one of the questions and the other pair has to answer them. While they are doing this, I will be monitoring them for sure.

While-Reading #2 / more specific vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks with some new words in relation to crime and punishmet.

I am going to stick some handouts to the board which are new vocabulary with their meanings but they are not in order besides, I will put them into two groups because I want this activity be a compitition, Then I will tell " If any groups find the best pair, they will put them in their colum on the board " and then let's see who the winner is. On the other side, I will write those pairs in the correct category on the ther side of the boards. I will monitor them while they are discussing the words and their meanings.

Post-Reading. (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the second text.

According to those handouts which I will give them in pre-reading that include all new words in both texts, I will ask them to read the second text quickly and then fill the gaps with those words in pairs. I will never forget monitoring while they are doing this exercise. As the last step, I will ask some question to ensure that everything is fine. Such as; take turns to remember facts about the text and some personalized questions like those questions which are on page 110 of Cutting Edge students' book, such as; Do you know any celebrity criminals? what did he/she do?....
