Procedure (35-45 minutes)
Start by welcoming Ss to the class . Ss look at the picture of desert and say what they can see . Ask Ss "Have you ever driven or been for a walk in the desert ?would you like to ?why ?why not ? " , answer the question by myself . Put Ss into pairs . Give them two minuets to complete the task . Check their answers as a class . Ask Ss to think of things they would need to take on a trip into the desert . Write their ideas on the board . Pre- teach new vocabulary (Fuel - /'fu-el/ (n) ) a material that is burned to produce heat or power . CCQs is it gas? / is it liquid ? Using some pictures to new vocabulary - (Map -/map/ (n) ) - (Compass - /'com-pass/ (n) ) - (First-aid kit - /'first-'aid /(n) ) - (matches - /'match-es/ .
Tell Ss they are going to hear advice from Jeff who works for a center for tourism in Australia and specializes in providing safety advice for visitors to the desert . Ask them which are the things we need to take that he mentioned ? Remind Ss that they are listening to take notes . Play the recording . Ask Ss to check answers in pairs . Check answers as a class . Ask Ss to complete the gaps individually while listening and ask them to scan the sentences . Give them HO1 . Play the recording again and ask them to complete the gaps . Ask them to check answers in pairs . Check answers as a class .
Write on the board several cases /a bit of sense /a few people . Check that Ss know the difference between countable and uncountable nouns like water and chair by CCQs can we add s to make it plural ? / can we say a water / a chair ? Tell them that are words to indicate amount or quantity . Ask them " Which of the words are countable ?which are uncountable ?" Chance /fuel / rule . - Chance (uncountable as mentioned as possibility ) - Fuel (uncountable ) - Rule (countable ) Ask students to look at the words in the gaps in HO1 and tell them that they are all quantifiers that used to indicate amount and quantity before nouns . Make three lists :-Quantifiers which are used with countable nouns e.g. several , a few , one or two . Quantifiers which are used with uncountable nouns e.g. a bit of , much , too much . Quantifiers which are used with both e.g. plenty of , no , enough ,some lots of , any Clarify the meaning of (too much often gives negative meaning ) (Enough means you have your needs )(plenty of means more than enough )(any used only in negative sentences or questions )
Individually , Ss complete the sentences using the list of quantifiers about their classroom or place of work . . Give Ss HO2 . Monitor and help when needed . Check the answers as a class and asked them to explain their answers .
Ask Ss to discuss the place they live using appropriate quantifiers using the following things(Cinemas /places to eat / sports facilities / pollution / internet cafes / green space /traffic / shops ) Give them an example of your own . Monitor and note down any common mistakes to deal with during feedback . Give feedback on errors .
