Description

In this lesson, students will be discussing about advantages and disadvantages of being an only child or having siblings. Lesson starts with a question that is related to topic which students will talk about. Then, teacher goes over the text and teaches essential vocabularies to comprehend the main idea. Next, students pair up and read passages together and answer True/False questions. After that, students rearrange sentences from the passage on giving handout. Finally, Students say what they think about the text and have a discussion.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist
  • To develop a selection of pre-reading strategies to improve the likelihood of comprehension and to learn new vocabularies.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop key reading sub-skills such as skimming, scanning, identifying the main ideas of texts or paragraphs, and guessing vocabulary from context.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Which do you think has more advantages, being an only child, or having brothers and sisters? Why?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher makes sure that students know essential lexis

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss work in pairs. A read ''The younger brother'', B read ''The only child''. Then Ss talk to their partner about whose childhood sounds happier.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss read the text more slowly and they answer T/F questions. Ss rearrange sentences from the text.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss discuss following questions: Do you have brothers and sisters, or are you an only child? Do you feel positive or negative about it?
