Procedure (37-45 minutes)
-T presents the word argue with a situational presentation. Then T says " What do you think argue means? " -T says "When is it polite to argue with people? Think of some situations where it is polite to say 'no' and disagree with other people. Discuss this with your partners.You have 2 minutes. " When Sts are done T asks the Sts to say what they talked about " (Task 1) -T says " Look at the man and the woman in the photos. Each one is having a conversation with another person. Read their half of the conversation. Which person is a host and which is a guest ? What are they discussing? Discuss this with your partners. You have 2 minutes." (Task 2) -ICQ " What are you going to find ? "
-T says " What would you say to the host and guest in exercise 2 if you were talking to them? Use the phrases in the task 3 to create two complete conversations. Do this with your partner. You have 3 minutes. " (Task 3) -ICQ "You are going to create conversations by ......? " - T says " We will listen to the two complete conversations that you've just completed. Listen and check your answers. " (Task 4) -ICQ " Why are we listening?" -T groups the Sts. Then, T says " What qualities does a perfect host have ? What qualities does a perfect guest have ? Discuss this with your groups. You have 2 minutes. " When Sts are done discussing T says " I want one person from each group to tell us what you think" (Task 5) -ICQ " Are you going to discuss how a host and a guest should behave ?" -T writes ' Oh...It sounds great. I'm sorry, but I have to study. Thanks for thinking of me. Perhaps we can meet up another time. ' on the board. Then T says "There are six different refusal items in this expression.Match the refusal items with the expressions. "(Task 6) -ICQ T models the first one
-T groups the Sts. T says " When was the last time you said no to an invitation? What was the event and why did you say no? Discuss this with your groups. You have 3 minutes." When Sts finish the task T says "I want one person from each group to explain the last time they said no to an invitation."(Task 7) -ICQ " Are you going to explain the last time you said no to an invitation? " "Are you going to do this alone" -T says " We will listen to one half of the conversation . Listen and find the event and the reason why Gabriella can't go." After the Sts listen T says " What is the event and why can't Gabriella go ? " Then T says " Gabriella was talking to Sandy. What do you think Sandy said ? (Task 8) -ICQ " What are we going to find while we are listening to the audio ?" -T says "Look at the task 11. There are some missing words. Listen to the complete conversation and fill in the blanks. " (Task 11) -ICQ "What are you going to do while you are listening?"
-T says " You will be working with your partners. I put eleven different situations on the wall all over the room. Read them and answer them by using different ways of saying no.You have 10 minutes for this." When Sts are done, T randomly asks " What would you do in this situation?" to some Sts. (Task 14 and 15) -ICQ T models by reading one of the cards and says no by using a refusal item. OPTIONAL TASK -T says "Read the situation cards and find a response for each situation. Do this with your partners. You have 4 minutes." (Photocopiable Activity 3.2) -ICQ " What are you going to do ?"
-While the Sts are doing PW and GW, T will note down some of the errors and some of the good sentences. And, in the end of the lesson T will talk about the sentences by eliciting from the Sts.
