Description

In this lesson, learners will be trained on answering "multiple choice questions" in the IELTS Academic exam.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about how to think differently in the context of iconoclasts' brains

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of iconoclasts' brains

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To generate learners' interest in the general topic of iconoclasts' brains

Put the pictures of the following people on the board: Ghandi - Einstein - Zuckerberg - Ghoniem - Gates Ask learners to think about what is common between all of them. Try to direct their discussion towards "success - intelligence - genius - brain". Elicit answers and encourage good ones.

Context-setting (3-4 minutes) • To generate learners’ interest in the topic of how to think differently and make them ready for the rext

Write this question on the board: Do these people have different brains from ours? Why/Why not? Ask learners to discuss in groups the answers to the question. Give them 2 minutes. After finishing, give open class feedback on content by listening to their opinions and showing interest in their answers.

Pre-teaching Vocabulary (7-8 minutes) • To pre-teach some words so as to make sure students do not face difficult words that might block their understanding while reading the text

Hold the HO1 in front of you (chesting). Tell learners that they are going to match the words to their definitions. Give learners HO1 and ask them to work in pairs. Give them 4 minutes. When they finish, they check with another pair. Give them AK 1 to check their answers and make sure they have no questions. Drill the words chorally and then individually.

While-Reading (20-22 minutes) • To provide students with a scanning and detailed reading task

Give learners HO2 and ask them to: read the questions carefully underline the keywords Give them 2 minutes. They work individually. Learners then check in pairs and compare their key words. When they finish, ask them to: try to come up with synonyms and paraphrases for these key words. Give them 2 minutes. They work in pairs. Now, ask learners to scan the text to find the keywords, synonyms and paraphrases. When they find them, they should read intensively to make sure of their answers. They work individually. ICQs: Will you scan for the same words or synonyms? Synonyms Will you work alone or in pairs? Alone Will you scan quickly or slowly? Quickly When you find the words, will you read quickly or slowly? Slowly Give them 15 minutes. When they finish, let them check in pairs. Discuss the answers with the whole class so as to make sure they all know why the right answer is the right one. Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide learners with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learnt as well as familiarise them with IELTS Speaking Task 2

Change pairs using coloured cards. Tell learners they have one minute to prepare for the speaking task. They can take notes during the minute. They should speak for at least a minute and a maximum of two minutes. When finished, they switch roles. ICQs: How long will you prepare? 1 min How long should you talk? 1 - 2 mins What will you do after finishing? Switch roles Give learners HO3 and ask them to start reading the questions and preparing their answers. After one minute, they should start interviewing each other. Monitor discretely and take notes. Give feedback on content. Write some correct and incorrect sentences on the board and ask them to determine which is which. They should correct the wrong ones in pairs.
