To provide gist listening practice using a text about attitudes in the context of success.

To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of attitudes to success.
Procedure (35-46 minutes)
Ask students to look at the pictures of Mariama and Remco on p. 27 and predict how they might be feeling about success or being successful. The students talk about it briefly in pairs and write 1-2 sentences about each person's attitude.
Students look at the questions in Ex. 1 and listen to the text to answer them in 1-2 sentences. ICQ 1: You will listen to complete which activity? Activity 1 ICQ 2: How many sentences you will write? 1 or 2 They will get in pairs and check if their answers match with the predictions they made in the lead-in part.
Students will listen to the text once again to complete Ex. 2. ICQ: You will listen to complete which activity? Activity 2 or True & False The teacher will nominate students to answer the questions and note down the answers on the board.
Students look at Ex. 3 and decide who says the sentences. They will check their answers in pairs using the script on p. 149. The teacher will nominate the students and write the answers on the board. They will look at the some of the highlighted words in the sentences. They will do the matching activity. Afterward, the teacher will clarify each word with CCQs (please see the LA sheet). The teacher will then clarify the form; -What are these? Nouns, verbs or adjectives? Adjectives -Can you show me the suffix in each word? Competitive (-ive) Comfortable (-able) Confident (-ant/ent) Arrogant (-ant/ent) and pronunciation.by writing the sounds in the phonemic script, modelling and drilling.
The students will look at the questions in 4 a. They will think of their answers and take short notes on each one to remember. ICQ: Will you write long answers, take short notes or just think? Think and take short notes Students get in pairs and do a Q&A with each other using the questions and their notes from the previous activity (4 b). ICQ: Which questions are you going to ask each other? on 4 a Each pair will summarize their ideas.
