ROMEO AND JULIET, READING LESSON
Intermediate B2 level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will read a play, Romeo and Juliet, by Shakespeare. The lesson will start with a short lead-in using pictures. This will be followed by a pre-teachnig vocabulary. Then the Ss will read the text for gist, a skimming activity. After that the Ss will read for detail. The T will use jigsaw reading and then cross grouping. At the end of the lesson the Ss will perform a scene from the text.

Materials

Abc Vocabulary exercise (Teacher made)
Abc Smart board
Abc Exercise 3 and 4 for reading questions
Abc Romeo and Juliet reading text
Abc HO for skimming activity
Abc Modern English version of the play.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading in the context of the play Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy in speaking using role play
  • To provide clarification and practice on vocabulary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-The T shows some pictures o the smart board. -The T ask some questions to the students using pictures like; " Do you like theatre?" " What was the last play you watched?" " Who is the man on this picture?" -The students produce some sentences.

Pre-teaching vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To reduce barriers to understand the text

- Set the students in pairs. - Give them the vocabulary HO. -The students work with their partners. -The Ss read the sentences in try to find the best option for the bold words given in the activity. -Give feadback using smart board. -Model and drill the words

While-Reading #1(Reading for gist) (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist on reading task

-Set the students in pairs. -Give them HO for skimming activity -Give them 5-7 mins to put the small paragraphs into correct order. -The students work in pairs -Monitor and help if it is needed. -The students unfold the paper and check their answers.

While-Reading #2 (Reading for detail) (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging, detailed information on the reading task

-Set the Ss in groups Group A: Romeo (They will read 1-6) Group B: Juliet (They will read 7-12) - Give the each group their parts and quesitons from the text. -Give them 10 mins to answer the questions. -The students work in groups and answer the questions. - After they finish with the questions, the Ss go outside of the classroom and find the answers on the walls in the corridor. -For each question a different group member goes outside, finds the answer. - The S reads the answer and runs back to her group to says it to her group firiends. - Place a music on the background for feedback part.

Cross- Grouping (5-7 minutes) • To share information about the missing parts in the play.

-Choose 3 or 4 students from each group -The chosen students swap their groups and speak about their parts in the reading text. -The Ss speak with their new group members and share information. -Now every student has detailed information about the other part of the story.

Post-Reading (9-10 minutes) • To provide accuracy and fluency and expand on what they've learned through speaking.

-Set the Ss in pairs -Give them some scenes from the text and modern English version of the text in speech bubbles. -Give them some time to think and speak with their partners. -The Ss prepare a mini dialogue for their scenes given and act it in front of the class. -Help them if it is needed. -Give delayed feedback if you have extra time.
